Growing up in Eastern North Carolina, this was a common scene during my childhood and early adult years. The old tobacco barns have been replaced by the modern bulk barn and tobacco is no longer the main crop here... it has been replaced with cotton and sod. BTW... the bulk barn doesn't hold a candle when it comes to character that these old tobacco barns have!

Did you know????
By the time the Currituck light was completed, sperm whale oil was no longer used much. Lard had become the primary fuel. Keepers toted containers of lard oil to refill the lamp reservoir at the top.
The lamp burned about three gallons a night.

The Octagon House in Carteret County has fascinated me since I was a kid. It is the oldest structure in Carteret County, NC and seems to be built according to a popular fad of eight sided houses of the mid 1800's. The grounds offer splendid views of the White Oak River and marsh like this one.

I had the honor of serving as one of the six jurors' for the The Scholastic Art Awards of Eastern/Central North Carolina. We spent the Friday and Saturday (January 6 & 7) judging over 2000 works of art for middle and high schools in the region.The Art Department of Barton College in Wilson, NC organized the event and is where all the judging took place. The Governor’s Student Achievement Award will be displayed in the Governor’s Mansion. The North Carolina Art Education Association Award, The Edward Brown Award, The Barton College Award, The Wilson Times Award, The American Vision Nominees (5 works), The Emerging Vision Award, the Jurors’’ Choice Portfolio, and all Gold Key works will be on exhibit at the Barton Art Galleries on campus of Barton College (see their site for dates). We had the privilege of working with three awesome people from Barton College… Mark Gordon, Regional Director… Susan Fecho, Chair, Department of Art and Design… and… Bonnie LoSchiavo, Secretary, Department of Art and Design.

Ended the year in the Mountains and began it on the Coast...

My family and I have spent the last week of 2011 in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains near Boone. Yesterday I spent the afternoon ringing 2012 in by plein air painting at the Cedar Point portion of the Croatan National Forest. I never tire of the North Carolina landscape... it is a spiritual journey for me to spend time painting it. One thing is for sure... NC is a gorgeous state from one end to the other as these photos I took within the past seven days attest to!

The temp reached 70 degrees yesterday and the light was perfect! The Cedar Point hiking trail was crowded so I picked a spot off the beaten path to paint his one. I met several nice people including the nicest young couple from Alabama who make Jacksonville their temporary home compliments of the USMC.

A few weekends ago I participated in the International Plein Air Painters (IPAP) 9th annual Worldwide Paint Out. Simply put... plein air artists from all over the world agree to paint on the same weekend to promote the tradition of plein air painting all over the globe. Most of the Eastern North Carolina artists decided to converge on historical Wilmington as our source of inspiration. I painted with several of my pards from the Onslow Outdoor Painters Society (OOPS) plus had the privilege of painting with dear friend, Brenda Behr. It was my first real plein air adventure this summer... my brand new French half easel was screaming for attention... I have been spending most of my time with T.S. Eliot, Langston Hughes, John Cheever, radicals, radicands, polynomials, Mendel, Eukaryotes, Genotypes, and Darwin this summer. Full time college and work leaves little time for painting... however, in the absence of painting... Eliot, Hughes, and Cheever have kept me sane... can't say to much for the others... back to the plein air weekend...

I worked on three paintings Saturday (which still need finishing touches) and had a great time sharing time with artist friends, talking to the public, and enjoying the beautiful weather and scenery of Wilmington. I spent the evening pub hopping with my son-in-law and friends which can all attest to the fact that I paint better than I play pool!

Sunday morning I got up bright and early and decided to set up along the downtown waterfront. It was the 10th anniversary of 911 and I wanted to paint something patriotic so I zeroed in on the USS North Carolina Battleship just across the Cape Fear River. 2011 marks the 50th Anniversary of the ship's arrival in Wilmington. I turned 50 this summer and have included a photo of me. mom, and dad on the Battleship when I was just a baby.

My painting of the battleship seemed to click from the beginning and I was in a pretty good grove when I met the coolest man from Sweden... Anders Persson. We talked and he explained how he and his wife, Marie, had just visited the battleship yesterday and were interested in American history.

Anders bought the painting on the spot saying he wished to take a piece of American history back to Sweden with them. I agreed to the sale under a couple conditions... he let me (#1) add the finishing touches and (#2) he and his wife visit with me awhile. I explained that I wanted them to spend a half hour talking to a regular Joe American so they wouldn't think Lindsay Lohan was the American norm! We had a great visit and I learned some interesting things about Sweden. This was very cool since my wife's great-grandfather was from Sweden. Let’s plan for August 28th. Maybe ask everyone if they’d like to have a little picnic afterwards, since there really is nowhere there to eat. There is only one restaurant there and it is closed on Sundays to the best of my knowledge. We could each bring a little something to share or bring our own individual brown-bag meals. Just need to let me know the count, and I’ll try to have water like Dean did last time since the weather is so hot. I haven’t been to Pollocksville yet, but will do so this week most likely Tuesday. The wildlife area is a right turn just before the bridge there in Pollocksville. I believe there is plenty of parking, and there is a covered picnic area with 2-4 tables. Not far from it is T-shaped pier and there are a few large shade trees in the parking lot. It’s not a large area, but I believe large enough to accommodate us.

With each stroke of a brush, Bernie Rosage, Jr. learns that his painting is evolving, both in technique and in purpose.

That purpose is to help make a difference in the lives of others.

With more than 600 pieces of art in his working portfolio, Rosage will present 40 for public viewing during “Life, Light and Pigment,” his second solo art exhibit hosted by The Council for the Arts through June and July.

The exhibit officially opens with a reception on June 5 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. with the opportunity to meet Rosage and purchase paintings until July 29. Proceeds from each sale will benefit the support other local artists through the Council for the Arts and benefit local families affected by the April 16 tornado through Operation B-4.

The Onslow County native often finds country roads, marshlands, barns and water — from Onslow County to Ireland — the subject of his work, attracted to their hues and shapes.

“Bernie is doing new paintings new subject matter and going different,” said Connie Wenner, executive director for the Council for the Arts. “As an artist you want your art to be out there. It’s not an inexpensive deal being an artist to give up 50 percent of his painting price ... I think it’s a wonderful thing he's doing for a worthy cause.”

“Life, Light and Pigment” is a collection of oil and acrylic paintings from the past two years. Most of the paintings in the exhibit were painted from life, either in the studio or on location en plein air. Rosage believes in bringing everyday objects to life in fresh and artistic ways by capturing light, mood and atmosphere.

“Most came from painting direct observations from life — still object or landscapes — and I love the way light plays on things and I like pigments naturally because they are paintings,” Rosage said. “Painting is my passion … as my paintings evolve in style I try to go beyond just what something looks like from observing it to something deeper, maybe sublime or divine.”

Rosage has dedicated several years to promoting art in the community through participating in local art shows and interacting with other artists to create a network of resources for those who are interested in finding their own passion for art. His first amateur exhibit featured scribbles of crayon on the walls of his bedroom as a young boy. It was a skill that was passed down from his father, but Rosage didn’t fully embrace painting until he became a teenager. He describes his training in art as being “self motivated to be taught.”

“My actual first public display was in 1979 in the Council for Arts for the high school student show … It was a painting of a sunset,” Rosage said. “I mostly do landscapes because there's something that draws me to them, there's peace, there's beauty.”

Since 2004, Rosage has split time between full time painting and working in his family’s business, Audio Plus in Jacksonville. In 2007, Rosage helped to create the Onslow Outdoor Painting Society, or OOPS. The group allows artists to gather once a month and set up easels outside to paint their own renditions of local sceneries.

“We’re in our fourth year now and that has brought some great friendships into my life and my art has grown since then from being around artists and talking to them about where my art has gone,” he said.

He and fellow artists Stephen Greer, Mitchell Morton and Dean Remington have formed a unique bond through painting in OOPS and every other Monday night to paint still paintings of objects. Rosage has found a deeper connections and stronger motivations for painting after the tornado that devastated communities in Jacksonville on April 16. After learning of the Operation B-4, a group of Onslow County Residents who teamed up to raise money for families affected by the tornado, he wondered how he could become a part of their efforts.

“That tornado was one mile from hitting my house, so one mile difference means that I would be depending on someone helping me,” Rosage said. “What I like is that they're keeping the money here to help the people in our hometown and I hope they raise a lot of money.”

Rosage said that it was a recent church sermon that inspired him to turn his art show into a charity event to help his neighbors rebuild after the storm.

“When I'm out painting landscapes I'm savoring God's creation firsthand,” Rosage said. “They have been doing a series at my church called ‘Dare to be Great’ and the idea of giving profits away to a worthy cause didn't enter my mind because this is how I make my living. But I felt inspired to do something for the tornado victims and the B-4 project appealed to me.”

Rosage has also set his sights on a new way to give back to his community through education. He just finished his first year teaching certification at Coastal Carolina Community College and currently taking online courses to earn his bachelor’s degree in education at East Carolina University.

“I just started college at age 49 to become an art teacher because teaching and art are both my passions. I like to encourage young artists to stick to it because art is so valuable to our society and to individuals,” Rosage said.

After decades of growing, exploring and discovering new paths in his artistic career, Rosage said that mastering the skill of painting cannot be achieved by a certain age, but continues throughout the life of an artist.

“My goal by the time I was 50 was to become a master painter. I'll be 50 in August,” Rosage said. “Now that has switched to being a painter for the Master. I don't know if I'll ever master painting, but I can make differences through my work if I'm doing it for the right reasons.”

ARTS DAY 2011... Do you want the good news first?

I attended Arts Day 2011 last Tuesday in Raleigh, NC. I attended with fellow members of the board of the Council for the Arts as representatives from Onslow County. The event is organized and lead by ARTS North Carolina, a statewide advocacy organization for the arts. ARTS NC calls for equity and access for the arts for all North Carolinians, unifies and connects North Carolina's arts communities, and fosters arts leadership. The day is filled with key note speakers, arts advocacy materials and training, plus speaking with government officials to exemplify the importance of the arts on our economy, education, and well being. The event is a yearly Legislative event that organizes and facilitates Grassroots Advocacy... the main source of arts funding for Onslow (and most NC counties) County.

Most people have the misconception that government funding of arts means their hard-earned tax dollars are going straight to some hippie busker playing an acoustic guitar on the street corner, or an artist whose goal is to shock the world with crayon masterpieces, or the photographer whose wants to stretch the boundaries of censorship but the truth of the matter is that art is a investment. Like most investments, there are some risks and some returns are greater than others but investing in the arts is a sound venture with overall paybacks too consistent to ignore. When our tax dollars are used to fund the arts they provide direct economic benefits to states and communities, they create jobs, attract investments, generate tax revenues, and stimulate local economies through tourism and consumer purchases. A robust arts industry prepares our children for the 21st century, and fills our lives with discovery and learning. Government funding is a crucial element in maintaining the arts industry even in tough economic times. After all, the arts are not part of the recession; they are part of the recovery. Pablo Picasso was on to something when he said, "Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life".

On a positive note: I got to spend the day with some great friends plus meet a ton of people passionate about the arts! I got to hear inspiring stories by several speakers including the golden voice of jazz singer and NC resident, Nnenna Freelon. We had the pleasure of meeting Onslow County Representative Phil Shepard. He was kind enough to meet with several members of our group without an appointment. He even invited us to lunch but we had to decline as our lunch was already provided by ARTS NC.

On a negative note: Our meeting with Onslow County Representative George Cleveland was cut short from the fifteen minutes scheduled to a whopping three minutes. Our appointment with him was disappointing to say the least as his mind seemed elsewhere. The main disappointment was the 23% cut in funding of the grass roots art grants that will directly effect us here in Onslow County.

Are you a Renaissance Man or Woman?

The Renaissance, known as the “Awakening” marked a great revival in the interest of art, literature, and learning. Art made major advances in technique and attitudes. Before the Renaissance, artwork was flat and two dimensional. The Renaissance gave us many great artists, like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael. Much attention was brought to form and proportion giving paintings and drawing a more three dimensional look. The use of mathematics and geometry to achieve perspective and proportions became common. Mathematics also made architecture more sophisticated while art made it more aesthetic. More attention was paid to realism and anatomy in sculpture with more dynamic poses that were more lifelike. Literature was of the utmost importance and the acquiring of knowledge was a high aspiration during this period. The scholastic thinkers were responsible for breakthrough thinking regarding the nature of the universe. The idea that the universe could be studied and approached objectively was a radical new concept and this opened the door for science to flourish in the 17th century. Cities grew and prospered during the Renaissance and rulers learned to tax the people. Trade grew between cities and other countries. As trade in goods increased, trade in ideas grew also. This wealth helped sustain the political and social changes that were occurring at the time. Wealth made it possible for many persons to take on the role of patron… a supporter of the arts. Patrons ranged from wealthy individuals to institutions like the Roman Catholic Church. Artists were now commissioned to create works of art and gained great notoriety and respect. The atmosphere in society in general was shifting and became more accepting of artistic innovation and experimentation. As more people moved to the cities, their interest in the arts increased. Innovations from artists were encouraged and a continued value was placed on classical art and writing of antiquity. Even today, we think of a person as a Renaissance Man (or Woman) when he or she is proficient in a wide range of fields and interests.

Food for thought... Are you a Renaissance Man or Woman?

Curiosita: An insatiably curious approach to life.
Dimonstratzione: A commitment to test knowledge through experience.
Sensazione: The continual refinement of the senses, especially sight, as the means to clarify experience.
Sfumato: A willingness to embrace ambiguity, paradox, and uncertainty.
Arte/Scienza: The development of the balance between science and art, logic and imagination ("whole-brain thinking").
Corporalita: The cultivation of ambidexterity, fitness, and poise.
Connessione: A recognition and appreciation for the connectedness of all things and phenomena; "systems thinking."

The Industrial Revolution brought us the....

The Industrial Revolution brought about many changes in the world including changes in the art world. The Industrial Revolution gave us the steam engine that changed the way people traveled… it also gave us the paint tube that changed the way artists painted. With oil pigments manufactured in tin tubes the artist could take his work afield and paint on location. The French called this painting on location “en plein aire” which literally translates in English as ‘in open air”. Eugene Boudin and Claude Monet were among the first noted artists who chose this method of painting scenes on location instead of from the comfort and restrictions of the studio. They started a tradition that still is strong today as many plein air painters (me included) prefer the open air to the studio. The furnaces of the Industrial Age also brought about the fusing of metal and mineral pigments giving artists a wide array of color choices on their palettes such as cobalt’s and cadmium's. Until the Industrial Revolution pigments were all natural… mostly minerals dug from the ground. These fused pigments gave artists high chroma colors that allowed them to go beyond tonal renderings with earth pigments to intense colorful paintings and the use of expressive color. Van Gogh was a master of expressive color. New vibrant colors, tube paints, and painting on location were the building blocks for Monet and the rest of the Impressionist artists that gave us one of the greatest art movements in history… Impressionism.

Last Sunday... the weather was beautiful and my plein painting fever was soothed as we (my dad, the Onslow Outdoor Painter's Society OOPS!, and I) converged on the small town of Burgaw, NC. Burgaw was recently highlighted in Our State magazine... click HERE for the article.

The quaint little town offered many painting subjects. Dad painted the old train station and I opted for the Confederate monument at the courthouse.

We had a great turnout from the OOPS group with about a dozen painters. The town folk were so nice and I met many interesting people. I met a really nice lady whose family have been in the area since the town formed. She showed interest in my painting and may purchase it for a gift.

Local Hero dies 65 years ago today!

65 years ago today, Joseph Humphrey of Kellum, NC, became a local hero... Not for his love of country and 4 years of service in the Pacific with the US Army during World War II but his willingness to sacrifice his life to save a four year old girl and her mother from a house fire early on the morning of March 22, 1946.

He saved the small girl by throwing her out the window and rushed back to save the woman but to no avail... he and the woman died that night from injuries incurred by the fire.

The little girl he saved is alive today and will celebrate her 69th birthday this October. The little girl is my mom, Maggie (Minnie) Humphrey Rosage... the woman was my grandmother, Minnie Hewitt Humphrey... and Joe was my grandfather... my hero!

Guernica is a painting by Pablo Picasso, in response to the bombing of Guernica, Basque Country, by German and Italian warplanes at the behest of the Spanish Nationalist forces, on 26 April 1937, during the Spanish Civil War.

Do artists have the right, or the responsibility, to impose their political, social, and philosophical beliefs on viewers?

In my opinion artists have the right to share their political, social, and philosophical beliefs on viewers. Note I said “share” vs. “impose”, I personally do not feel that anyone has the right to impose anything on anyone. Impose is a strong word that conjures up thoughts of tyranny, dictatorships, and caste systems in my mind. For example, I am a Christian and feel strongly about my beliefs but I think it rude to impose them on anyone. I willingly share my beliefs and testimony with others allowing them make their own decisions about faith. The same can be said for art, or just about anything in life.

All kinds of persons are artists’… they range from the weekend hobbyists to the full fledged professionals. Artists create artwork for two main reasons; 1… to get something out of their work and 2… to give something out of their work. Getting something from their work can range from satisfaction, peace of mind from a stress filled world, to money. Those that give are interested in communicating through their work. They have something to say… it may be bringing awareness to something, righting a wrong, or something as simple as saying, “I was here”. This group of artists not only has a right but have a responsibility to share their voice whether it is for political, social, or philosophical reasons. They can’t help it… it’s in them and it has to come out! The truly great artists learn to balance the getting and the giving!

The “Color Phenomena” illusion color fascinates me. There are several illusions on the site showing how color is affected by surrounding colors. Although I find this fascinating, it is nothing new to me. As an artist, I use these illusions in my paintings all the time. I like to refer to them as principles vs. illusions, just as M.E. Chevreul (1786 - 1889) did in his book, The Principles of Harmony and Contrast of Colours, and Their Applications to the Arts. This book is unquestionably one of the greatest books ever written on color. It dominated the schools of Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism, and, after 155 years, it still is an important reference for artist today.

Chevreul's ideas on color harmony, contrast effects, and optical mixtures were way ahead of their time and have been validated by modern scientific research in visual perception.

Claude Monet

Claude Monet, the father of the art movement know as, Impressionism, revered Chevreul’s book, and applied his theories in his paintings. One can argue that this book and these theories are the foundation for Impressionism.

The Impressionists invented a technique called “broken color” that is still used today by some artists, myself included. They would place small dabs or strokes of color next to each other on their canvases, rarely did they mix colors on their palettes. This broken color method gave the illusion of light in their paintings and allowed the viewer to optically mix the colors in the brain. This also gave their paintings an overall color harmony, since this technique didn’t allow the colors to become dull, or muddy, from being over mixed. If you look at an impressionistic painting up close, you will see abstract shapes and patterns of brushstrokes. Gradually step back, your mind starts to fit the puzzle pieces together and a distinct image appears. This is one of the most appealing thing about viewing impressionistic art, the viewer becomes involved in the process.

For example, concerning the Law of Simultaneous Contrast, Chevreu states, "In the case where the eye sees at the same time two contiguous colors, they will appear as dissimilar as possible, both in their optical composition and in the height of their tone." Simply put, when two complimentary colors (colors opposite each other on the color wheel; blue and orange, red and green, and yellow and violet) are placed next to each other the contrast is at greatest. The Impressionists brought this theory to life in their paintings, and it brought their paintings to life. The use of complementary colors next to each other creates a visual tension, a vibration of color. It made their paintings hum with excitement, lending more to an emotive quality than a realistic one.

I have used these color illusions in my paintings for years. My greatest reward is when the viewer becomes a part of the visual process, these principles allow that to happen. Like the Impressionists of old, seldom am I interested in capturing what a scene looks like. In my humble opinion, that is boring for the artist and the viewer, I’m wanting the viewer to look through my eyes and catch a glimpse of something more than what something looks like.

An Artist’s Peak Experience
Abraham Maslow, the inventor of the term, “Peak experience”, says that "peak experiences are sudden feelings of intense happiness and well-being, possibly the awareness of an "ultimate truth" and the unity of all things ... the experience fills the individual with wonder and awe....he feels at one with the world, and is pleased with it ...." They are moments when you feel more at one with yourself and the world, more integrated. You feel happy, even ecstatic, interconnected and in harmony.

For me, as an artist, painting is a struggle. My struggle comes from forcing myself to adhere to an almost daily routine of painting and trying to create order out of all the chaos that surrounds me. Too many times life gets in the way and painting has to take a back seat... but sometimes life gets in the way and inspiration comes. When this happens it's as if the painting I’m working on takes on a life of its own. It's as if divine intervention takes over and I am merely a tool in a higher power’s hands. Unfortunately, this doesn’t happen every time I pick up a brush but it happens enough to give me those “peak experiences” that are forever etched in my mind and that I am eternally grateful for. While painting en plein aire (French term for “on location”) with a group of local artists I had one of those divine encounters or “peak experiences” as defined by Maslow.

We, the Onslow Outdoor Painters Society (OOPS), were painting on location at the Beirut Memorial, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, on one April afternoon while the azaleas and dogwoods were in full bloom. The OOPS artists were scattered throughout the site painting from various vantage points. I set my easel near the statue at the memorial and opted for a close up of the statue's boots. Since I was positioned at the focal point of the memorial I had the opportunity to meet many nice people. Two of those people opened my eyes and broke my heart creating my peak experience.

Two ladies approached me, commented on my painting and one asked for a business card. As we talked she told me, "My son is buried over there", motioning to the Veterans Cemetery adjacent to the memorial. I was taken back, she was my age and her son was close in age to my three oldest children. I am used to burials of WWII, Korean, and Vietnam veterans over there, older veterans who lived full lives and not someone my children's age. She (wish I could remember her name) mentioned her son was killed in 2004 and that her friend's son was killed less than a year ago. My eyes were opened to how real this war is and my heart ached for these two ladies. I noticed one lady wearing a "Gold Star" necklace knowing well what it represented since my wife's grandmother was a Gold Star mom. She lost her oldest son in Korea in 1950. When I got home, I added the necklace to my painting as a tribute to these two anonymous ladies, their impact on me, and Gold Star moms everywhere. I have four children of my own... my mind can't even imagine what Gold Star moms and families go through.

As I write this... Cpl Johnathan Taylor, age 23, a young Marine from Florida stationed here at Camp Lejeune was the most recently identified death of the War on Terror. He was killed on February 23, 2011 by hostile fire in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan bringing the American casualty toll to 5923. (Operation Enduring Freedom, iCasualties) Whatever your politics may be... I think everyone agrees that we must be mindful and prayerful of our men and women in the military service of our great country. 5923 may simply be a number to some people but to many, it represents lives shaken to their very foundations. I'm talking about the family and friends of this 5923 and unfortunately, future families who will experience the kind of sorrow exhibited by the two women I spoke with as I painted my tribute to them.

My painting, A Tribute to Gold Star Moms, is a visual reminder of my experience of that eventful day. It echoes Maslow’s definition of peak experience through my unity with those two anonymous women, my sense of wonder and awe, and the overwhelming sense of the sublime and divine that I gained from the experience.

Would you want an asphalt plant in your neighborhood?

Would you want an asphalt plant in your neighborhood? You probably never gave it thought, to be honest, neither had I until a local company filed for the proper permits to build and operate one approximately one mile from my home. Since the company’s announcement to build I have acted like a mad man studying the effects and “what ifs” of a hot mix asphalt plant on local citizens. My studies reveal a reoccurring theme; asphalt plants release millions of pounds of chemicals in the air during production each year. These toxins are unhealthy to breathe and present a problem for citizens living within six miles of a plant. I even joined a local organization of concerned citizens called the PON Foundation (PON), an acronym for “Protecting Our Neighborhoods”, to help in the fight to stop this plant from being built at the proposed location. Asphalt plants should not be allowed to operate in residential areas. I have donated time, money, and service in this fight to protect my family and way of life on this issue.

On February 23, 2010, the Onslow County Board of Adjustment voted to issue a Special Use Permit to Morton Trucking Inc., which will allow the company to build a 200-ton-an-hour asphalt plant near Halltown Road and U.S. 17 (Maps). Areas within a six mile radius that will be affected include: Piney Green, Wolf Swamp, Kellum, Pumpkin Center, Country Club, and the Commons. Largely populated housing developments affected are Country Club, Country Club Hills, Highland Forest, Regalwoods, Fieldcrest, Sunset Acres, Fox Horn, and Jacksonville Commons. Several schools, preschools, apartments, churches, and businesses are also included in the six mile zone that will experience implications from this plant.

A 200-ton-an-hour asphalt plant will release millions of pounds of chemicals to the air during production each year. These chemicals include many cancer-causing toxic air pollutants such as arsenic, benzene, formaldehyde, cadmium, lead, volatile organic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and very fine condensed particulates (BRENDL, BRENDL - Asphalt Plant Fact Flyer Sheets). Asphalt fumes contain substances known to cause cancer, coughing, wheezing or shortness of breath, severe irritation of the skin, headaches, dizziness, and nausea. Louis Zeller, science director for the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League (BRENDL) stated in an interview with the Daily News that, “Arsenic, benzene and formaldehyde are very harmful to children, the elderly, the infirm, and those who work and play outdoors”. Zeller added, “Asphalt pollution is big pollution and exposure to low levels of benzene and other pollutants in the toxic soup emitted by an asphalt plant have been known to cause Leukemia and negatively affect the immune system and bone marrow” (Dewitt). The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that very fine condensed particulates called particulate matter can pose the greatest problems because they can get deep into your lungs, and some may even get into the bloodstream. Scientific studies have linked particle pollution, especially fine particles, with a series of significant health problems, including: decreased lung function; aggravated asthma; development of chronic bronchitis; irregular heartbeat; heart attacks; and premature death in people with heart or lung disease (EPA).

Asphalt plants bring other concerns to communities beyond health issues. Local landowners will suffer adverse impacts to their property values. A 2003 study by BREDL on property values around a North Carolina asphalt plant showed a 27 percent average drop in property value and a 56 percent decrease in areas closest to the plant (BRENDL). Environmental issues cause another concern, especially how run-off from the plants aggregate piles can affect our rivers and drinking water. The proposed plant site adjoins a protected area of wetlands on the Little Northeast Creek. Heavy rains from hurricanes and nor’easters, common to our area, could prove devastating to our local rivers as the Little Northeast Creek feeds the Northeast Creek which runs into the New River. The water and river concerns have brought the New River Foundation and the White Oak-New Riverkeeper Alliance organizations into the fray. All their hard work protecting and cleaning up our rivers over the past decade could easily be wiped out with a single hurricane. Our rivers and coastline draw tourist from all over the state and beyond, one can only imagine the economic impact on Onslow County if we lost these prized resources.

Most people embrace new industry which bring jobs and revenue to our area, myself included, but there are cases where the costs outweigh the profits. An asphalt plant in a populated area is such a case. The proposed plant is said to employ four to ten people on site. The county revenues generated by these salary numbers will not come close to offsetting the loss in county property taxes due to the 27 to 56 percent decrease in property values. There have been claims that we breathe in toxins every time we fill our car’s gas tank. This is true but the two minutes a week it takes to fill our tanks cannot be compared to the twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week that an asphalt plant releases toxins into the air. Some may argue that the North Carolina Division of Air Quality has the responsibility of keeping our state’s air clean and monitoring asphalt sites to make sure they follow proper guidelines. This is true, but the unabashed truth is that they are underfunded, under staffed, and cannot monitor all the state plants in a timely fashion.

The fight to stop the proposed site of this asphalt plant is a personal one for me. I am a landscape artist and the idea of not being able to paint outside in my own yard frightens me. As an artist, I know the dangers cadmium and lead can present since they are incorporated in many oil paints. I make sure I use the utmost care when handling them. I am also aware that toxins do not have to smell to present a problem. They can be odorless as in the odorless mineral spirits I use to clean my brushes which is extremely dangerous if not properly handled.

Art is my passion and my livelihood. The real cause for my fight goes beyond passion, livelihood, and property values; I fight for my daughter’s health and way of life. My nine year old daughter has asthma and an asphalt plant in our neighborhood means that she will never be able to play outside in our yard again. I’m not against asphalt plants; I enjoy driving on paved roads, I merely have no use for them in our neighborhoods. A simple solution is to build the plant in an unpopulated area where people could have the choice to live near it. When the bottom line and a handful of jobs are more important than our quality of life, we are in a sad state of affairs.

All paintings in this blog post were painted en plein aire near my home. All are within the area that will be affected by the proposed asphalt site location. Most of the locals will recognize these scenes. Sad to think that if the permit is granted by North Carolina Division of Air Quality (public hearing March 1st... click HERE for details) I will never be able to recreate these paintings on location ever again without adverse health effects!

Critique of Van Gogh's... Wheat Field and Cypress Trees

Description
Vincent Van Gogh is one of history’s most influential artists. His work and style is easily recognizable, even among those with a limited interest in art. I chose his painting, Wheat Field and Cypress Trees for a recent critique assignment. Van Gogh used oils as his medium and canvas as his support for this landscape which measures 28 ½ by 36 inches. The original, painted in 1889, is on display at the National Gallery in London, England. The painting depicts a natural landscape consisting of a wheat field, cypress trees, distant mountains, and a cloudy sky. The painting is impressionistic in style matching the new bright palette of colors used by the Impressionist artists of Van Gogh’s day, but he takes Impressionism to the next level with his use of expressive color, texture, and line.

Analysis
The majority of the painting is painted in middle tones with the exception of the dark contrasting cypress trees. There is cool color dominance throughout the piece except for the warm yellows of the wheat field. Van Gogh uses an analogous color scheme of yellow, green, and blue with green being the dominate color. These colors next to each other on the color wheel plus white give the piece a color harmony with a limited palette. Arial perspective is evident in the mountains as the cool pale blues push them back into the distance. The horizon is set on the lower third of the canvas and the elements are designed in such a manner to lead the eye throughout the painting and straight to the focal point… the cypress trees. The eye travels along the color contrast of the grass up the right and then to the left where it slows at the subordinate element of the smaller rounded bushes… From there the eye moves along the diagonal line of the mountains and stops at the strong vertical of the cypress trees. This point is the center of interest and is emphasized by being the darkest point on the canvas. The eyes then dance a while in the circular strokes of the clouds only to be funneled back to the focal point of the cypress trees. There is an asymmetrical balance to the painting created by the tall dark conical shape of the cypress trees and the small rounded shape of the bushes to the left. There is a rhythm in the sky area with the repetition of swirling strokes.

Interpretation
As I view Wheat Fields and Cypress Trees, I get the sense that I am there standing in the field feeling the wind blowing on my face. I can see the wheat swaying and the clouds rolling. This effect is echoed in Van Gogh’s brushwork as each stroke seems to move. The impasto texture only adds to this sensation for me. It’s as if Van Gogh wants me to feel the sensations he felt while painting this! I do not know if he painted this “en plein aire” (on location) but I’m sure that it was at least done from plein air studies and/or memories of the open air… it suggests that to strongly not to have been experienced firsthand.

Judgment
Wheat Fields and Cypress Trees and other works by Vincent Van Gogh stand out in a crowd as compared to other works of his and our time. Van Gogh’s use of impasto texture, linear stokes that followed the contour of shapes like clouds, grass, hillsides, etc., plus his uses of expressive color make his work unique. These techniques impacted his work so much that it became an easily identifiable style… his style. His work wasn’t accepted in his time because the public had never seen anything like it but it has had a major impact on the world and art ever since. I feel this painting was successful even though it was ahead of its time. Would I change anything on this painting to make it better?... Heck no! It speaks to me as is!

Some say Van Gogh was crazy but I call him a genius. For me, Wheat Fields and Cypress Trees embodies enjoying nature at its fullest. It has a “stop and smell the roses” attitude. Was that what Van Gogh was trying to convey? I think so!

How might the human race be different if humans had evolved a dominant right hemisphere?

Imagine a world with more John Lennons’ and fewer Vladimir Lenins‘, it's easy if you try. If the human race were right-brain dominate thinkers our world would definitely be different. It would be a place where intuitive, holistic, and creative thoughts would abound with acceptance and credibility. We would see the whole picture more often, placing greater value on human life and our environment and less on the bottom line. What’s in it for us would replace what’s in it for me. We would question things more... Common Sense and Common Good would be motivating factors in all we do. By now you can tell I’m biased when it comes to this subject, after all, I am a right-brainer!

Can right-brain thinking change the world?

As long as I can remember art has been a part of my life. I was one of the few people in high school who took art class seriously and didn't consider it a crypt course. I was fortunate enough to have a great teacher who really worked with those of us who were serious about art. Unfortunately, growing up in the 70's where left-brain thinkers seemed to rule... us right-brainers were often told... "Oh that's a pretty picture... but you have to get a real job if you want to eat". As a grown up I now realize I was caving into false teachings and letting someone else tell me what to dream.

Today, thank goodness, there is a shift, the right-brain revenge per say. Logical and precise left-brain thinking gave us the Information Age... now comes the Conceptual Age, ruled by artistry, empathy, and emotion. According to best-selling author and business analyst, Daniel Pink, not only can right-brain thinking change the world… it is changing it! In an Issue Post online news article, linked below, the author uses Pink’s book, A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future, to support this statement.

Can Right-Brain Thinking Change the World? (2009).

I selected this website because the title hooked me. Once hooked, I read the article and Pink made many valid points about his thoughts on right-brain thinking. He mentions society is learning to better appreciate the non-linear, creative work of right-brain thinkers such as artists, musicians, designers and storytellers while the logical, linear, spreadsheet abilities of left-brainers still matter, but they matter less. Many left-brain professionals are becoming vulnerable in that they can be easily replaced. Many professions like accounting, law and computer programming are being exported to cheaper workers overseas or are being performed by computers.

Pink’s conclusion and mine are the same, right-brain and left-brain thinking need to give way to a new order of whole-brain thinking if we are to be at our best. We are seeing signs of it in the workplace, however, we need to start introducing the value of right-brain thinking at an earlier age so it can catch up with its counterpart. For that to begin, schools need to give equal weight to the arts, creativity, and the skills of imagination and synthesis. Balance and harmony are fruits of the whole-brain thinker.

You may say that I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one, I hope someday you'll join us, and the world will be as one.

Claude Monet was a painter of light. He gave us a momentary glimpse in time that can never exist again. For me… his artwork gave us a fresh way of seeing and thinking. This painting from his “Haystack” series exemplifies my comments by allowing us to visually see a light on an object captured in a moment of time.

5. Give tangible form to feelings and ideas.

Art is full of emotion and feelings. Many times it is created with emotion and evokes emotion… that is how art often speaks to me personally. I am not much of an abstract painter (as seen in this piece) but I did this painting several years ago in dealing with some feelings I was having. The piece is titled "Tired of Being Angry" and was my cry out from the total exhaustion of being stuck in the angry mode of grief. My friend/sister was killed in an auto accident in 1998. 2004 was an especially rough year for me for some reason... I couldn't explain it... how was I doing so well and then five years later I was getting angry to the point my family was suffering because of it? This painting came as a result of it... it was my way of letting go and letting God take care of it.

Note carefully what Jesus says here - and what he doesn’t say:

he doesn’t tell us to become the salt of the earth,

he doesn’t tell us to be like the salt of the earth…

and he doesn’t tell us become the light of the world

or to reflect the light of the world…

Rather, he says:

we ARE the salt of the earth

and
we ARE the light of the world.

We are the salt…

Salt brings out the flavor in food it brings out the best in what it seasons. But when salt goes flat, or when there’s too little, it’s of no use; or, if there’s too much salt it ruins what it tries to season…

We are the light…

Light allows us to see what there is to be seen what is beautiful, what is true. and light brings the warmth of the energy which is its source. But when our light dims, we see only in shadows and when we hide our light it no longer serves anyone and the warmth begins to chill…

These are strong and vital images Jesus uses and he uses them to describe us, to speak of what he sees us to be.

In any year or season these are good and challenging words to hear.

Art helps us see things we can only imagine. Artists have been taking us into the unknown since the beginning. I chose this painting by Bouguereau as my example. He depicts angels carrying a young deceased woman into Heaven. This painting has always appealed to me since the passing of my sister who was about the same age as Bouguereau’s subject.

The Arc de Triomphe ("Triumphal Arch"), Paris, France

Art records our progress and deeds in many ways. Ancient civilizations are often defined by their art through ARTifacts found by archaeologists. The Arc de Triomphe (Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile) is one of the most famous monuments in Paris. It stands in the centre of the Place Charles de Gaulle at the western end of the Champs-Élysées. The "Triumphal Arch” was built to honor those who fought and died for France in the French Revolution, and the Napoleonic Wars and houses the vault of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I. It is the larger of two arch’s built (Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel stands near the Louve). This monument immediately came to mind for my example as I remember my uncle describing the feeling of pride he got riding past this arch while serving in France during World War II.

Artists have the a knack for allowing us to see things in different ways… even everyday objects we take for granted can be transformed into works of art through their endeavors. Duane Keiser is a painter from Richmond, Virginia. He has been doing a daily painting since December 10, 2004, slowing down in April 2006 for other projects. I chose Duane’s work (I could have chosen any one of his hundreds of paintings) because he is "the father" of the ”painting a day” art movement that is sweeping the globe. The premise is to paint small “postcard” size paintings from life in one sitting every day. The subjects are usually everyday objects that often go unnoticed around us.

I participated in the “painting a day” project in 2007 and painted 180 paintings that year… not quite everyday but enough to keep me busy! Three of those paintings are listed below...

Six Functions of Art

1. Create places for some human purpose.

Dolman at Poulnabrone, The Burren, County Clare, Ireland.

Art can be found everywhere. It often serves as practical purposes for our human needs, for instance, the intricate patterns on quilts are works of art but the quilt serves another purpose. The Dolman at Poulnabrone in Ireland is such a piece of artwork. It was originally covered with earth and served as a tomb. The Burren, a great rocky expanse in County Clare, is one of the world's truly unique places in that it can supports Arctic, Mediterranean and Alpine plants side-by-side. Its ancient, awe inspiring stone structures hold secrets from the past that may never be unraveled. Poulnabrone Portal Dolmen is an ancient stone tomb dating between 2000 - 2500 B.C. It's just one of the many ancient historic monuments dotted throughout Ireland. I picked this as my example because I went to Ireland and was awestruck by countless scenes like this.

Creative people make our world a better place. Their sensitivity, flexibility, playfulness, productivity, fluency, analytical and organizational skills contribute so much to society on all levels. From the visual arts to NASA, creativity can be witnessed continually with benefits for us all. I think that there is something eternal within us that make us want to create.

My brother Mike.

For me as an artist, I feel a need to create. If I am not creating there is a void and I’m miserable… just ask my wife and kids! The creative person I’d like to highlight is my brother, Mike. My sister and I are generally recognized as the creative ones in the family because we always had a pencil or paintbrush in our hands. Mike exhibits the creative traits mentioned, however, his medium is cars! He loves restoring old cars! He is flexible enough to see the possibilities of an old rust bucket sitting in some farmer’s old barn. He has the originality to modify metal and parts to transform a car from Maybelle to Mayhem! Mike can transform his ideas into reality with his analytical skills by tearing things apart and figuring out what makes them tick. He then exhibits organizational skills by putting everything back together even better than it was originally. He is very productive with his restorations and makes a healthy profit from his projects. However, like most creative people, he does it for the sheer joy of creating!

My love of history and art mesh as one when it comes to plein air painting, especially early American plein air painting history as exercised through the Hudson River School. The Hudson River School wasn't a school but an art movement during the mid-19th century embodied by a group of landscape painters whose aesthetic vision was influenced by romanticism. The paintings for which the movement is named depict the Hudson River Valley and the surrounding area, including the Catskill, Adirondack, and the White Mountains; eventually works by the second generation of artists associated with the school expanded to include other locales. Hudson River School paintings reflect three themes of America in the 19th century: discovery, exploration, and settlement. The paintings also depict the American landscape as a pastoral setting, where human beings and nature coexist peacefully. Hudson River School landscapes are characterized by their realistic, detailed, and sometimes idealized portrayal of nature.

The artist Thomas Cole is generally acknowledged as the founder of the Hudson River School. Cole took a steamship up the Hudson in the autumn of 1825, the same year the Erie Canal opened, stopping first at West Point, then at Catskill landing where he ventured west high up into the eastern Catskill Mountains of New York State to paint the first landscapes of the area. The first review of his work appeared in the New York Evening Post on November 22, 1825

Cole's close friend, Asher Durand, became a prominent figure in the school as well. With the advent of photography, the need for realistic renderings gave way to the sublime as landscapes took on a more spiritual feel. There was no need to capture what a scene looked like, photography could do that, more emphasis was put on the mood, light, and feeling the artist gained from the scene and being in nature. This was the goal of the second generation Hudson River School painters (my favorites) like Frederic Church, John Kensett, and Sanford Gifford.

In gathering the visual data for their paintings, these artists would travel to rather extraordinary and extreme environments, the likes of which would not permit the act of painting in some cases. During these expeditions, plein air sketches and memories would be recorded and the paintings would be rendered later, upon the artists' safe return home. They would do their finished works in the studio from their sketches.

I recently returned from my own painting expedition in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in September. I was accompanied on this journey with two of my artist friends, Mitchell Morton and Stephen Greer. The three of us and several other plein air artists had the pleasure of studying at the Florence Thomas Art School under the master artist, Tony Griffin.

A blog post a mile long could be wrote about Tony concerning his art training, his artwork, and his workshop but I'll save that for another day. Of all the gems I brought home from his workshop the greatest was this... to capture the essence of the scene! With Tony's guidance I learned to simplify... before his workshop, I was putting too much emphasis on getting a finished painting. Tony taught me that plein air painting is a a gathering of color notes, a simplified composition, and a spiritual experience. I can still hear him saying... "Observe, Mix, and Apply" while I work at my easel. Thanks Tony!

Taking what I have learned from Tony Griffin and the Hudson River painters I now use my plein air pieces as studies for studio works. I am not so concerned about getting a finished painting in the field anymore. Below is one of the plein air paintings I did during the workshop. The scene is set along the New River in one of Tony's hidden spots.

Jean Wenner ~ Artist, Art Advocate & Friend will sorely be missed.

Jean Wenner, founder and former Director of the Council for the Arts passed away December 14, 2010. She truly enriched her community and left a positive legacy in her memory. Her impact on Onslow County concerning the Arts is beyond measure as a pioneer with vision for the arts in our community. She was dedicated to her family and extended family of friends and artists. She opened doors and created many opportunities for countless local artists (myself included) who will forever be grateful for her dedication. She was an accomplished artist whose work crowns many collections throughout the country.

The Blue Ridge Mountains are Heaven on earth to me... Ashe County is one of my favorite spots to kayak, hike, fish, visit with old friends, and PAINT. I have probably painted over 50 paintings in the Fleetwood area alone. One of my favorite spots is the Cooper Farm along the New River in Fleetwood. Mr Cooper's barn with it's colorful quilt pattern was highlighted in the October 2010 Issue of Our State Magazine.

I painted this painting from life during one of our "Brush-ka-teer" sittings recently. It is a rewarding experience to paint with three other artists who are my prayer partners. I have special plans for this painting as a gift to someone I am thankful for. When Dean set up this still life I immediately thought of Psalms 119:105. Verses 105 and 106 were key verses in Pastor Jason's sermon last week at FBC and thus the title.

Plein air works for me are small studies done on location to gain color notes, composition, and the overall "feel" of a scene. Most times I do not do any extra work on them in the studio... if I do it is usually a few tweaks so the piece still qualifies as a true plein air being done 90% on location. Many times I take these small studies and use them as reference for larger studio works... I plan to do that with this one.

On 6 June 1778 Dudley Lee passed in the vicinity of Taneytown, Frederick Co, MD, as a draft substitute in Colonel Otho Holland William's Regiment, the 6th Maryland. That unit served in New Jersey and New York as part of Washington's army. Dudley continued to re-enlist for the remainder of the war. In August of 1780 he mustered in the 1st Maryland Regiment. This was essentially the same regiment, having been reorganized. By this time, the 1st Maryland was in the Carolinas, under the command of General Nathanial Greene. The regiment took part in most of the major actions of Greene's Southern Campaign.

General George Washington relied heavily upon the Marylanders as one of the few reliable fighting units in the early Continental Army. For this reason, Maryland is sometimes known as "The Old Line State."

Enlisted at the age of 59 and fought throughout the war. Was captured by Stonewall Jackson at Harper's Ferry and released on a prisoners exchange. Fought in several skirmishes and battles... the most famous being the Battle of Monocacy.

The Tarheels of the Old North State, including over 1300 men from Onslow County, have earned their page in history with their deeds of valor, contributions, and dedication to the Confederate Cause of 1861 - 1865. Among those 1300+ was private Lewis E. Humphrey, Company K, 61st North Carolina Infantry. Lewis enlisted in April 1862 at the age of 34 in the Confederate army. He left behind no slaves... only a wife and five small children to tend the family farm. New Bern (30 miles from his home) had just fallen to Union forces and rumors of an Conscription Act forced him to leave the world he knew and embark on a journey that would eventually bring him back home 2 1/2 years later via a discharge for disability after the Battle of the Crater (late 1864).

Mustered in as a private and moved up the ranks mustering out as Captain of Company A. The 7th West Virginia suffered such heavy casualties that it was reduced from a regiment of ten companies to a battalion of four companies by wars end. CC was wounded on May 3, 1863 at the Battle of Chancellorsville. As Sargent... he was urging his men forward when a ball struck him in the face and exited through his open mouth... He wore a beard from that point on. He was furloughed home and missed the Battle of Gettysburg. CC was present for every major campaign with the exception of some of the Wilderness Campaign when he was hospitalized in Washington with malaria and almost died.

Raymond was a proud veteran and always celebrated Armistice Day (as he always referred to it)while he was alive. Here he is pictured with a cake for such a celebration... notice the Rainbow Division rainbows. His regiment was the furthermost allied unit in German territory when the Armistice was called at 11:00 AM on the 11th day of the 11th month, 1918. The honor gave his regiment head of column as they headed toward Germany. While marching into Belgium... being the first friendly liberators the Belgians saw in their county in years... the 167th regimental band struck up the tune "Dixie" as they entered the first town.

Oscar Lee was the recipient of the Navy Cross of Valor for service in World War I. The medal was presented by Josephus Daniels, Secretary of the Navy, for the president, on November 11, 1920, for services during the war as set forth in the following letter:

The Navy Cross is awarded to Seaman Second Class Oscar H. Lee, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism as a member of the crew of boats sent out from the U.S.S. Wanderer to the rescue of men from the SS Florence H, which vessel, loaded with explosives, was burned in the harbor of Quiberon on the night of the 17th of April, 1918. Almost immediately after the outbreak of fire the water in the vicinity of Florence H was covered with burning powder boxes, many of which exploded, scattering flames throughout the wreckage. The crews of the Wanderer's boats drove their boats into the burning mass without thought of danger to themselves and, assisted by boats from the other ships present in the harbor, succeeded in saving the lives of many men who, but for the help so promptly and heroically extended, must have perished in the wreckage.

Oscar Lee's name is in the Hall of Fame in Washington for his naval activities, and his image is in bronze in the Maryland State Hall of Fame.

The attack against Okinawa was launched on Easter Sunday, April 1, 1945. Nobody suspected at the time that it was to be the last beachhead, indeed the last campaign, of World War II.

The 7th, assigned to XXIV Corps, pivoted at the east coast and started on the drive south. Soon it experienced the heaviest Japanese artillery fire of the Pacific war, absorbing more than 40,000 rounds of high explosive in two weeks. The 32d Infantry was on the Division's left on the Nakagusuku Wan (later Buckner Bay); the 184th Infantry under Colonel Roy A. Greene was on the right. Colonel Frank Pachler's 17th Infantry soldiers were in close support. Finn's 32nd Soldiers met a strong Japanese force on Skyline Ridge, which became the scene of bitter conflict. In assessing the Division's accomplishments in the Okinawa campaign, the staff reckoned that the Hourglass men had killed between 25,000 and 28,000 Japanese soldiers, and had taken 4,584 prisoners--more than half of them soldiers of the Japanese regular army, including more than a hundred officers up to the rank of major. The Division suffered 1,116 killed, and nearly 6,000 wounded, to make the total of its World War II casualties 8,135.

I donned 1860's period attire two weekends in a row portraying a civilian plein air artist. Last weekend Olivia and I attended the Civil War reenactment at Fort Branch. The weekend before Olivia, my grandson, Christian, and I attended a Living History program at Hammocks Beach State Park. The three of us are pictured above.

Here I am working from my small cigar box pochade box painting an old house on the grounds of Fort Branch near Hamilton, NC. Marsha Harris took this photo of me while I was painting.

Here's the 6x8" finished painting from the sitting. Olivia met some friends and they all played in the old house while I painted it.

I met some nice people as well and had many interesting conversations while painting. One was Tom Whelan, a photographer who was kind enough to share these photos with me. Thanks again Tom!

As I was painting I used the "Complementary Color" technique where I paint the opposite color to what I see in the first stage. The spectators that dropped by while I was working this stage must have scratched their heads and asked themselves, "What kind of drug is this guy on?"

I chose an more intimate setting for my painting on Sunday morning. This 8x10" painting is a view across the field where the battle took place later that afternoon.

At the Hammocks Beach Living History program I portrayed a younger Claude Monet and gave a demo on plein air painting.

In 1863 Monet discovers Manet's painting and paints "en plein air" in the Fontainebleau forest for the first time. My age and impression are closer to Monet as seen in his self portrait painted in 1886 posted here.

The day was full of excitement!

I gave my finished painting to Charlie Wilton who commanded the artillery battery in above photo.

Demo for the Art Academy at WOHS...

For the third semester in a row I have had the honor to speak to the Art Academy students at White Oak High School. White Oak holds a special place in my heart... I graduated there in 1979. In fact, three of my four children did also. Blanche Johnson was my art teacher at WOHS in the 70's and cultivated my interest in art. I wish she was living today so we could share thoughts and paint together.

I always enjoy speaking to the art students (over 100 in the Academy) because they are genuinely interested and ask great questions. A special thanks to all of them for making me feel at home with their kindness and respect. Debra Pylypiw and Brandi Criscitiello have done an awesome job instructing these students.

Here they are filtering in the auditorium for my demo.

I choose to do a quick (25 minute) demo in acrylics to show them the technique of working in complementary colors. We spoke about plein air painting, editing the scene, painting the major shapes, and working shapes within the major shapes. I have included the painting from the demo after I tweaked it a bit in the studio.

Civil War Living History Event ~ Saturday, October 30th

Join me and several Civil War reenactors at Hammocks Beach State Park , 1572 Hammocks Beach Road, Swansboro, NC., this Saturday (10am-5pm) and watch history come alive! See artillery, cavalry, and infantry soldiers in 1860's period uniforms as they give demonstrations throughout the day. The event is FREE to the public!

My wife, Tami, is an avid runner and loves to run the 3 mile loop around the Jacksonville Commons. Our daughter, Olivia, usually joins in on the fun by following/leading with her bike. I exercise my creative muscles by plein air painting while they are off really exercising! This allows me 45-minutes to an hour for some small 6x8" quick studies. I sat on a park bench and tried my new homemade cigar pochade box for this one.

Enjoyed the beautiful weather this weekend plein air painting and cooking out! Saturday after work I met Tami and Olivia at Richard Ray Park... Tami was planning her daily run around Jacksonville Commons while Olivia led the way on her bike. This gave me about 45 minutes to turn out this small 6x8" painting. BTW... LOVE my new pochade box!

Sunday was gorgeous and I spent the afternoon painting with my friends from OOPS... (Onslow Outdoor Painters Society). We painted at the Octagon House (1850) in Cedar Point.

I started painting seriously in late 2004 with the encouragement of several cyber artist friends at Wet Canvas. In 2007, artist friend and mentor, Mike Rooney, challenged me to paint 100 paintings in a year... I took him up on his offer and haven't slowed down since. This summer I surpassed a goal I set for myself in that same year... to paint 500 paintings. I reached my goal in June 2010 and gave my 500th painting to my middle daughter for her birthday. I hope you enjoy this video of 150 of the 500+ paintings I've painted to date. Thanks for your patronage and encouragement over the past several years.

North Carolina is rapidly becoming known as "Wine Country". Vineyards are replacing what were once tobacco fields all across the Old North State. North Carolina is home to more than 90 wineries. The number of wineries has more than quadrupled since 2001. Check out the details of NC Wineries HERE.

Among the 90 plus wineries is the New River Winery located in Lansing, Ashe County. The small winery turns out some of the best in the state and is rapidly building a reputation of superb wines.

Bernie Rosage’s “Snowy Blue Ridge” elegantly captures the serenity of a snowy winter afternoon. We found this painting on the internet and were delighted to learn that it had been painted near a family home in Fleetwood. Bernie was so gracious to allow us to use a rendition of this work on our Winter Blush label.
