Growing up in the coastal plains region of North Carolina snow is something I see once a year if I'm lucky. Cotton fields with their white expanse are as close as I get. I set up this small branch of cotton in a "Ball" jar with an old iron in the studio and painted it from life. Why cotton?... It's conflicting textures of roughness and smoothness and the mere fact that most people don't know what cotton looks or grows like were the motivating factors behind this one. I hope you enjoy it... cotton still makes me think of snow.

Another tobacco barn... I never tire of painting them. They are such willing subjects... their character lines are as impressive as any "Old Salt" or "Mountaineer". Old tobacco barns like this one are rapidly becoming a thing of the past. Their replacements... the bulk barn... just doesn't have the personality these old giants have. I spent many summers as a youth working around barns just like this one.

Every other Tuesday night I paint with three other artists... we call ourselves the "Four Brush-ka-teers"... Our only rule... we paint from life. We set up a still life and paint alla prima for approx two hours. This one was done on one of our Tuesdays in April when the azaleas were in their glory... a beautiful site in Eastern North Carolina.

Anyone who has followed my work knows that I love to paint old vintage cameras. American nostalgia can not be better exemplified than by this painting I did from life of the famous Brownie, the name of a long-running and extremely popular series of simple and inexpensive cameras made by Kodak. The Brownie popularized low-cost photography and introduced the concept of the snapshot. The first Brownie, introduced in February, 1900, was a very basic cardboard box camera with a simple lens. With its simple controls and initial price of $1, it was intended to be a camera that anyone could afford and use. The camera was named after the popular cartoons created by Palmer Cox. The model I painted here is the Brownie Hawkeye Flash Model introduced in 1949 (1950 for the flash synchronized model). The original price was $5.50 and the flash was $7. It was discontinued in July 1961... one month before I was born.

Everyday objects painted from life is the essence of the "Painting a Day" art movement that is gaining momentum in the art collecting market.

My Lil' Painting Buddy, Olivia, and I set out on another plein air painting adventure recently. We went to one of our favorite spots at the Cedar Point branch of the Croatan National Forest. I got my Lil' Buddy all set up and painting and I picked out a good view for myself. As I began setting up my french easel I discovered something... Whoops... I forgot my brushes... they were on my desk at home just where I left them while packing my gear. Adapting to the dilemma I decided to do my painting totally with my palette knives which were luckily packed in my easel. The result was something totally different than you are used to seeing from me... I enjoyed the freedom of doing something totally different and fresh. You may see more of these in the future... I didn't hold back and piled the paint on thick.

The small North Carolina coastal town of Swansboro is dubbed "the friendly city by the sea"... and aptly so. It's quaint shops and great eating places make for a must trip if you are ever in eastern North Carolina. One of my favorite structures in the old town is the Olde Brick Store circa 1839. The former warehouse scarred by Civil War mortar shells once held naval stores, thousands of barrels of turpentine and sometimes prisoners.

I am always drawn to the marshlands near my home... in fact... I never tire of painting them. I painted this scene on location en plein aire at the Cedar Point branch of the Croatan National Forest in eastern North Carolina. A great place to kayak, hike, camp, and PAINT! I painted this impressionistic style landscape during a recent paint out with my local plein air group... OOPS. The scene is set in the coastal town of Surf City on Topsail Island, North Carolina. This Surf City Crab sign caught my eye and was a pleasure to paint.

This painting titled "Confederate Canteen" comes out just in time for Confederate Memorial Day which is recognized on May 10th in North Carolina and several other southern states. North Carolina recognizes May 10th as the date because that is the day Stonewall Jackson died... almost all NC troops in Lee's Army of Northern Virginia fought in Stonewall's corps. This replica Confederate drum style canteen was set up in my studio and painted from life. My special tribute to the southern soldier...

I have mentioned in the past that I like to study painting masters... old and new. I love to experiment with different techniques and palettes to gain a better understanding of my medium... oil painting. One of my favorite old masters is Anders Zorn... He was famous for using a limited palette... many times using only three colors plus white. I was experimenting with a modern version of his limited palette... (Yellow Ochre, Cad Red Lt, Ivory Black w/ Ultramarine Blue, and Titanium White),... and this cover of a painting he did of his wife, Emma Zorn, 1887, is the result. I enjoyed doing this small study.

This pair of ballet point shoes was painted from life in my studio. I loved the challenge presented by the lights and darks, form, and shadows. There is something classical and peaceful about an old pair of ballet shoes... "Waiting for the Recital" seems to be a perfect title for this painting.

Thatched roofed cottages are a common site in Ireland... a beautiful site I must add. We visited Bunratty Folk Park where we got to see and go in several. The village was set up recreating the general feel of the 19th century with a period style village main street. The cottages came alive as we stepped back in time... we even got to enjoy the smell of peat fires burning in the cottage fireplaces.

This small painting was the result of a live demo in my Sunday School class. I had the students read "light" verses from the Bible as I painted. We talked about how light adds form to objects... in art and real life... let your light shine...

Scripture is often the inspiration for my paintings. This still life I set up and painted from life is such an example. My inspiration comes from Jesus' words in Matthew... "You are the salt of the earth" and "You are the light of the world." I think it cool the fact that one can associate salt with taste and thus the mouth and light with sight. Plainly put... our words (what comes out of our mouth) and actions (what others see us do) reveal who we really are.
