I love working from life... it hons the skills of observation for an artist. After I set up this small still life it occurred to me that this pear was nude. In fact... Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres' "The Bather of Valpinçon" came to mind. Click on the link and let me know what you think. For me... pears are as beautiful as the human form.

This small still life titled "Cadmium Lemon" was painted from life as part of my "a painting a day" series. The play on subject matter ties my love of painting everyday objects like this lemon and my love of art represented by the tube of cadmium lemon paint.

Downtown Wilmington, North Carolina is steeped in history and southern charm. I could spend countless hours painting her old buildings with their varied shapes, colors and designs. This building on Front Street is across the street from the famed "Cotton Exchange". Upstairs is a studio apartment owned by one of my friends... it's as if he owns a piece of history.

Another willing subject posed in my studio for a small still life from life. This apple was a study in shadows and dramatic lighting. I back-lit the apple and allowed the shadow to help emphasize the composition. I like this square format and plan to do many more like this one.

This painting is dedicated to all those artists who enjoy the experiences of painting "en plein aire"... translated... "in open air". It's an experience that sharpens all the skills of the artist. All the senses are filled... plein air artists know what I am trying to say. Happy painting...

This peaceful marshland setting set along the Intra-Coastal Waterway is a common scene along the coast of North Carolina. North Carolina has some of the most pristine marshlands and coastline. A vacation spot worth the journey.

Old Tobacco Barn

"Old Tobacco Barn"... 6x8" Oil on Panel, alla prima, 2-2008.
SOLD... Thanks again Barbara B.!

Another barn... I never tire of painting them. They are such willing subjects... their character lines are as impressive as any "Old Salt" or "Mountaineer". Old tobacco barns like this one are rapidly becoming a thing of the past. Their replacements... the bulk barn... just doesn't have the personality these old giants have. I spent many summers as a youth working around barns just like this one.

I have been on a barn kick lately... I never tire of painting them. This old barn is like family. It is located on the road I grew up on... I have passed it thousands of times but finally got that "Round TUIT" and picked up the brush to capture it before it is gone forever. I painted this from a photo as a demo for the "Career Day" at my daughter's school. We talked about being an artist as a career and the importance of supporting the arts.

Daily News article about the event... Butcher? Baker? Candlestick maker?
