Bernie and several of his art students will have paintings on exhibit at the Council for the Arts "Freedom Fountain" Exhibit from May 5 - 25, 2013. Opening Reception, Sunday, May 5th from 2:30-4:00pm. Drop by the Council and see this special show. Several students' work is shown in this video produced by G10 for the city of Jacksonville.

"Spend the Day with Claude Monet" Workshop

Date: Saturday, May 18, 2013 ~ 10am until 3pm

Media: Acrylic or Oil Paints

Level: Beginner and Intermediate

Workshop Fee: $15 per student… The CFTA is helping fund this special workshop.

Class Size: Limited to 10 adults

Location: Jean Wenner Studio, Council for the Arts, 826 New Bridge Street, Jacksonville, NC 28540.

Materials: Bring a packed lunch… we’ll have lunch in the studio. Bring materials listed below for whatever medium you plan to use (Easels will be provided).

Oil Painters List: Assorted Bristle style brushes, odorless mineral spirits, container for oms, mixing palette, rags or paper towels, two 11x14” canvases, and paints - Titanium White, Cadmium Red (or Vermillion), Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Sap Green, and Dioxazine Purple.

Acrylics Painters List: Assorted Bristle style brushes, water container, mixing palette, paper towels, two 11x14” canvases, and paints - Titanium White, Cadmium Red (or Vermillion), Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Sap Green (or Hooker’s Green), and Dioxazine Purple.

Workshop Details: This one day workshop will introduce the students to the "Father of Impressionism," Claude Monet. Artist/instructor, Bernie Rosage Jr., will dress in circa 1880 attire and give an interactive living history program as he portrays a middle aged Claude Monet. He will share art history from the Impressionist Art Movement and talk about Claude Monet's contributions and unique painting style. This workshop is more than a living history program, the main focus is painting in the style of Impressionism. Bernie (aka Monet) will teach students the impressionistic style as they paint a finished painting in the style made famous by Monet. The workshop is designed for beginning and intermediate artists using the mediums of oils and/or acrylics. Bernie’s step-by-step approach and individual attention makes this workshop perfect for beginning artists but challenging enough for intermediates. This unique workshop allows the students to witness art history through one of the art world's most important figures plus paint in the style of one of the world's most influential art movements... Impressionism!

Connie Wenner, Stephen Greer, and I were interviewed by Byron Woods of the Independent Weekly concerning Arts Day 2011, the cutbacks, and visit with our (rather rude) Onslow County Representative George Cleveland. The two images are letters to Mr. Cleveland from Onslow County 5th grade art students in Mrs Hobbs art class at Carolina Forest Elementary.

OAS 2010 Spring Art Show Awards...
The Onslow Art Societys 49th Annual Spring Art Show will hang in the Bradford Baysden Gallery at the Council for the Arts, 826 New Bridge St., Jacksonville, NC until May 28.

The judge for this show was Becca Scott Reynolds, Gallery and Education Director for Arts Council of Wayne Co.

Fifty-eight area artists are having their work shown.

The Art Society is proud to announce the winners of this years spring show.

The Claire Armstrong Best in Show was awarded to Bernie Rosage, Jr. of Jacksonville for his oil painting, "Sean Dempsey in the Rare Auld Time"

The Claire Armstrong Endowment Award went to Mark Scott of Hampstead for "Last Curtain Call", a mixed media. The Onslow Art Societys Memorial Award was won by Penny Craven of Kinston for a mixed media painting, "The Coffee House Buddies." The Onslow County Award went to Johnnie Lee Scott of Richlands for a Polaroid Transfer, "Cavanaugh House Views." The Dr. Timothy Edwards Award was won by Robert Rigsby of Goldsboro for "Goose Showing Off", an oil painting and The Frame Game Gift Certificate was awarded to Mitchell Morton of Hubert for "Ottaway Burns," an acrylic. The Cheap Joes Gift Certificate went to Bill Sketoe of Cedar Point for "Symmetrical Contrast," an acrylic.

An Award of Excellence was awarded to:Jim Dees of Williamston for "Garden of the Gods," a photograph; Terry Rosenfelder of Wilmington for "Creekside Cottage," an oil; Donna Slade of Wake Forest for a color pencil painting, "Chucks Canvas."

An Award of Merit was presented to: Patsy Kennedy Lain of Hubert for "Home Sweet Home", an acrylic; Lynn Padgett of Holly Ridge for "Fish House Dock," a Mixed Media painting; Caleb Hayre of Jacksonville for "Ol Glory," an acrylic.

Honorable Mentions went to Carol Hovey of Wilmington for "Tapestry I-Carolina Concerto, a watercolor; Sarah Thrasher of New Bern for her photograph, "Empty,"; Bates Toone of Wilmington for "Wayne Barn," a watercolor: Johnnie Lee Scott of Richlands for "Looking Back to the Eighteen Hundreds," 3-D; Bernie Rosage, Jr. of Jacksonville for "Ha Penny Bridge, Dublin, Ireland," an oil; Sherry Thurston of Sneads Ferry for "Welcome Home," a watercolor .

New Exhibit at the Council for the Arts in Jacksonville, NC

"Living Our Legacy, Honoring Our Past, Shaping Our Future in the Arts"




In honor of Black History Month the Council for the Arts (826 New Bridge Street, Jacksonville, NC) will feature displays and events produced by Mr. Oliver Hill, President of Northeast Community Development Corporation.

This show, Living Our Legacy, Honoring Our Past and Shaping Our Future in the Arts will showcase paintings, basket weaving, music and storytelling by artists past and present.

* Artists: Ms. BF Reed, Ms. Annie Mattock and Mr. Pearless Speller, Ms. Nettie Hardison (deceased) and Ms. Angelica Gilliam and Ms. Alexis Gilliam (young artists.)

* Music: Ms. Roberta Spicer, Ms. Sonja Williams and Ms. Allison Tynise Sutton (young musician.)

* Basket Weaving: Ms. Margaret E. Brown.

* Story Telling: Ms. Louise Anderson (deceased)

In creating this exhibition, Oliver Hill states: Art helps shape a community and builds its strength. Not only will the exhibits and displays educate the community on Black Art, it will also add to the downtown economic base and that is part of our corporations mission: building strong communities to survive during all economic times.

The reception was held February 7th from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Entertainment and refreshments were provided by the Northeast Community Development Corporation.

Take an artistic journey to the Emerald Isle as seen through the eyes and palette of American Artist, Bernie Rosage Jr. The entire "Enchanting Ireland" collection (39 oil paintings) is on exhibit here for the first time. This collection was inspired by a trip Bernie and his wife, Tami, took to Ireland in celebration of their 20th wedding anniversary and their family heritage. These 39 works are the culmination of 11 months of arduous work… “I thoroughly enjoyed painting this series… with each stroke it felt as if I was still in that special place” states Rosage. He goes on to say, “It is my wish that you (the viewer) get a sense of the beauty and magical quality of the Irish landscape, culture, and her people as you view these works… in short… I hope you too are Enchanted.”

Bernie Rosage Jr. is a native of Onslow County, North Carolina, where he resides with his wife, Tami, their children and grandchildren. Bernie’s passion for art started at an early age and continues as a self taught artist. He likes the term "self motivated to be taught" as he works hard to fuel his passion of oil painting. His painterly approach to color and texture adds to his unique sense of style, best defined as Impressionistic Realism. His subjects are often personal and convey feelings of peace, serenity, and nostalgia. "I am drawn to country roads, marshlands, cottages, barns, trees, open fields, flowing rivers, etc... anything that eludes to a peaceful, calming feeling when viewed," states Rosage. His paintings are a wonderful culmination of sensitivity and skill and are collected throughout the United States, Ireland, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

OOPS Plein Air Exhibit

80 paintings by 13 artists' are on display through the month of June in the Baysden Gallery at the Council for the Arts in Jacksonville, NC. All works are plein air pieces done by the Onslow Outdoor Painters Society (OOPS) artists.

Ten paintings by Bernie Rosage Jr. are featured in the show and Olivia, his six year old daughter, has one.
