Relay for Life... "Victory Lap"

Celebrate... Remember... Fight Back...!
It was humbling and uplifting seeing all the heroes this weekend at the Relay for Life in Jacksonville... especially during the survivor's "Victory Lap" which inspired this small painting I did today. It was great to see the support of the community uniting for a common cause.

Class Size: Limited to 8 artists
Location: Jean Wenner Studio at the Council for the Arts and at Wilson Bay Park near the Council.

Concept:
Have you felt a little overwhelmed by the thought of trying to paint en plein air? Bernie shows you how fun the process can be as he breaks it down into a series of manageable steps. Learn what to expect in the field, what to pack, how to work with a limited palette, how to choose your subject matter wisely, simplify it and develop a dynamic design, plus more!

Experience:
This workshop is designed for all levels of artists who have little or no experience in plein air painting. As the founder of the Onslow Outdoor Painters Society (OOPS!), Bernie is constantly approached by artists who express an interest in plein air painting but are crippled by the intimidation of it. The goal of this workshop is dispel that fear and unveil the joys and benefits of painting in the open air on location. All artists, especially experienced studio artists, will benefit from the plein air experience.

Instructor Bio:
Bernie Rosage Jr. is an award winning painter and an enthusiastic instructor. He is a member of the Onslow Art Society, Blue Ridge Art Clan, Southern Plein Air Painters Guild, "Plein Eire" Painters of Ireland, and founder of the Onslow Outdoor Painters Society (OOPS!). One of his favorite ways to paint is on location en plein aire... the French term literally translates in open air. Bernie’s paintings are a wonderful culmination of sensitivity and skill and are collected throughout the United States, Ireland, Australia, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. About this painting:
I never tire painting the North Carolina landscape... I live on the Carolina Coast but spend as much time in the Blue Ridge mountains as possible, all the while, painting as I journey through life.

The Eastern North Carolina landscape is dotted with tobacco barn scenes like this. Unfortunately, they are becoming fewer and farther apart.... a constant reminder that things change and people move on...

Boudin's Original
About this painting:
I love to study and work from the old masters. This small painting is a cover of a portion of a larger work by Eugene Boudin titled, “Jetty at High Tide, Trouville.” I have been an admirer and student of Boudin’s work for some time but had the privilege of seeing his work in person for the first time at the Landscapes from the Age of Impressionism Exhibit (October 21, 2007–January 20, 2008) at the North Carolina Museum of Art.

Eugène Boudin (12 July 1824 – 8 August 1898) was one of the first French landscape painters to paint outdoors. Boudin was a marine painter, and expert in the rendering of all that goes upon the sea and along its shores.

In the News: I delivered several new paintings to New Bern ArtWorks Gallery.

If you are in New Bern, North Carolina, you have to drop by New Bern ArtWorks and Company Gallery. It is  one of the most impressive galleries in the state. The owners have done a great job of transforming the historic Baxter Jewelry Building into a functional gallery and working artists' open studios while maintaining the essence of the old jewelry store. I am honored to be represented by the gallery and associated with some of the best artists' around.

In the News: Two generations enter 51st OAS Show.

Recently my father (Bernie Sr.) and I both entered paintings in the 51st Annual Onslow Art Society Spring Show. Dad painted when I was a kid but has recently taken up the challenge again. Here's a photo of us at the opening. The show runs at the Council for the Arts through April.

I was fortunate enough to be awarded the "Onslow County Artist Award" due to the painting "Blue Ridge Autumn" pictured below. A good friend of mine purchased the painting... thanks Karen.

Last month I painted with a group of plein air artists at Surf City, NC. We painted all day and by late afternoon, this was the climatic ending to a gorgeous day. This piece is a study from one of the plein air works I did that day.
