"The Collin's Barn"... Bernie gives art demo to Mrs Nickle's 8th grade art class at NBMS.

"The Collin's Barn"... 8x10" oil on linen panel, alla prima by Bernie Rosage Jr., 12-2009. Study as an art demo for Mrs Nickle's 8th grade art class at New Bridge Middle School.

This original oil painting study "The Collin's Barn" by American Artist, Bernie Rosage Jr. is available for purchase at my etsy.com store.

The subject for this painting is from an old photo taken some years back of the Collin's old pack house... the barn is being claimed by mother nature and neglect now and is only a remnant of what we see here. I have painted this old barn several times... it is located on the road I grew up on. The other special thing about this painting is that it was painted as a demonstration for Mrs Nickle's 8th grade art class at New Bridge Middle School in Jacksonville, NC. I occasionally do these art demos to help promote the arts to young minds and artists. The class was very receptive and asked some great questions.... check out the video below to get a glimpse of the cool day I had yesterday...

THIS JUST IN... Bernie launches Art Affiliate Program...

If you are an art collector... Thank you! What would the art world be like without you? Our museums and galleries would be empty, artists would lose a platform to grow from, and all our lives would have less meaning.

A special thank you to all the patrons who have purchased my work over the past several years... you have been a blessing to me and I want to return that blessing to you through my Art Affiliate program.

The program is designed for my art collectors and braggarts who want to make $$$ by referring my available paintings to their friends, family, and acquaintances as potential patrons… does this sound like something you would be interested in?…

Thank you sincerely... Bernie

"Cedars at Northeast Creek"... 8x10" oil on linen panel, en plein aire by Bernie Rosage Jr., 11-15-2009.
.
This painting was painted en plein aire with the OOPS (Onslow Outdoor Painters Society) group that I paint with once a month. Sunday was gorgeous... we were just coming off a week long rain (approx 15 inches according to the local weatherman) and the sunshine and mild temps made the day perfect. We painted at the boat access area of Northeast Creek Park in Jacksonville, NC. The water was high due to the previous week of rain but that never hindered us a bit. I simplified the scene by editing man made objects like a gazebo and power lines (check out the video to see) and went for the essence of what drew me to the scene... the light on the reeds contrasted against the dark cedar trees.

Bernie gives demo to Sophomore Art Academy at White Oak High School

I had the privilege and honor to speak to the Sophomore Art Academy at White Oak High School in Jacksonville, NC. I gave an art demo and it was really cool to have the undivided attention of approx 75 students who were so mannerly and asked some great questions. I attended art classes under the late Blanche Johnson at White Oak in the 1970's... wish she was there...

"Plein Air Study: Swansboro, NC"... 8x10" oil on panel, en plein aire by Bernie Rosage Jr., 11-1-09.
.
I was itching to get out and plein air paint... somewhere... anywhere. I called a couple of plein air pards and we decided to converge on Bicentennial Park in downtown Swansboro, NC. I went to the early service at church and arrived in Swansboro around noon. On the way I passed through a drenching downpour but was determined to paint even if it meant finding shelter to do so. Surprisingly enough the rain skirted around us all day with the exception of a few drops here and there. I used the Zorn limited palettte for this painting... it worked well for the overcast look of the day. The Zorn palette (often used by artist and namesake Anders Zorn) consists of Yellow Ochre, Cad Red, Ivory Black (with a tad of Ultramarine Blue) and Titanium White. This scene is set looking across the White Oak River towards Clyde Phillips fish house.

Growing up in the coastal plains region of North Carolina snow is something I see once a year if I'm lucky. Cotton fields with their white expanse are as close as I get. I set up this small branch of cotton in a "Ball" jar with an old iron in the studio and painted it from life. Why cotton?... It's conflicting textures of roughness and smoothness and the mere fact that most people don't know what cotton looks or grows like were the motivating factors behind this one. I hope you enjoy it... cotton still makes me think of snow.

Down East Tobacco Barn in Snow... 9x12" Oil on canvas, alla prima, Bernie Rosage Jr., 10-2009.

Another tobacco barn... I never tire of painting them. Very seldom do we get snow in Eastern North Carolina... known as Down East to the locals. The scene comes from a photo taken last winter just after one of our few and far between snow falls. The mood for the scene is set by the almost monochromatic gray look with the chopped cornstalks allowing the only color in the setting. This old tobacco barn resting at the edge of a copse of long-leaf pines is typical Down East... A very peaceful scene... wouldn't you agree?

All my paintings are signed originals using artist grade oils and archival surfaces. "Certificate of Authenticity" included.

"Major John Daves House" plein air by Bernie Rosage Jr.

Major John Daves House, Historic New Bern, NC... 9x12" oil on gallery wrapped canvas, painted en plein aire 9-13-2009 for IPAP's WWPO by Bernie Rosage Jr. Click on image to enlarge... especially to appreciate the rich texture and palette knife work in this one.

This plein air piece was painted in historic New Bern, NC for the 7th annual IPAP Worldwide Paint Out. I painted this view of the Major John Daves House from the backyard of the John Wright Stanly House. The home (circa 1770) is located at 313 George Street and is a fine example of a Georgian coastal cottage. Major John Daves was a Revolutionary war patriot.

Bernie Rosage Jr and New Bern ArtWorks and Company Gallery are auctioning paintings to raise money and awareness in October for Breast Cancer Awareness... Bernie is doing his part by allowing ALL the proceeds from bids on his painting "Emma" (below) to go to this GREAT cause. If this cause is dear to your heart please pick up the phone and place a bid on his painting. A win/win situation... get an original oil painting by Bernie and support the cause of Breast Cancer Awareness.

"Emma" after Anders Zorn... 8x10x1.75" Oil on panel, alla prima, using the Zorn palette (Yellow Ochre, Cad Red Lt, Ivory Black w/ Ultramarine Blue, and Titanium White). Click on image to see a larger view...

This original oil painting by American Artist, Bernie Rosage Jr. is available by auction to help promote Breast Cancer Awareness through an auction at New Bern ArtWorks and Company Gallery. Several of the artists affiliated with the gallery are also taking part in the important event throughout the month of October.

Here's how to bid... you have to call the gallery at 252-634-9002 and mention that you'd like to bid on Bernie Rosages' painting titled "Emma"... opening bid is $40... mention that you saw it on my website.  I realize this is a pain in the BUTT but it's for a great cause! BTW... all the proceeds from your bid go to the cause!

About this painting...
I have mentioned in the past that I like to study painting masters... old and new. I love to experiment with different techniques and palettes to gain a better understanding of my medium... oil painting. One of my favorite old masters is Anders Zorn... He was famous for using a limited palette... many times using only three colors plus white. I was experimenting with a modern version of his limited palette... (Yellow Ochre, Cad Red Lt, Ivory Black w/ Ultramarine Blue, and Titanium White),... and this cover of a painting he did of his wife, Emma Zorn, 1887, is the result. I enjoyed doing this small study.
Thanks in advance...
Bernie

Tarkil Branch Homestead... 8x8" Oil on panel, painted by Bernie Rosage Jr. en plein air, August 2009.

Benny and Annette Fountain recently opened the Tarkil Branch Farm’s Homestead Museum, located on part of the working 375-acre farm near Fountaintown in Duplin County, NC. The farm came into the family in 1912 when Willie Hunter (Grandfather of Benny Fountain) purchased the land. In 1926, Willie sold 82 acres of land to David Fountain (Benny Fountain's father). This 82 acre tract included the 1830's house proudly on display.

They graciously opened the farm to the Onslow Outdoor Painters Society (OOPS) one Sunday in August for our monthly Paint Out... one of the BEST places we have painted to date. Benny dropped by and spent most of the afternoon with us and gave us an awesome tour of the buildings and shared the personal history behind the farm.... Southern hospitality at its best... thank you sincerely Benny!

Click HERE to read all about the farm, including bus tours, school groups, history, hiking trails, directions and much more.

OOPS members present... LtoR: Bernie, Jeff, Eileen, Earl, Donna, Olivia (my lil' painting buddy and daughter), Mitchell, Kit, Benny Fountain (owner), Pat, and Dean.

The site offered an array of vintage buildings as subjects to paint...

The crowning jewel was this old house which dated back to 1830 and was even occupied after the Civil War by Hosea Goodman Lanier a corporal in Company B, 3rd Regiment, North Carolina Troops, Confederate States of America.

Here I am working on my tobacco barn painting... photo compliments of Olivia, my lil' painting buddy and daughter.

Olivia decided to paint the outhouse... did a great job too!

Down East Tobacco Barn... 9x12" Oil on canvas, alla prima, Bernie Rosage Jr., 9-2009.

Another tobacco barn... I never tire of painting them. They are such willing subjects... their character lines are as impressive as any "Old Salt" or "Mountaineer". Old tobacco barns like this one are rapidly becoming a thing of the past. Their replacements... the bulk barn... just doesn't have the personality these old giants have. I spent many summers as a youth working around barns just like this one.

Plein Air Painters and Cyclists converge on the historic town on New Bern for great causes!

The Eastern NC Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society announced over 2,400 cyclists and 300 volunteers participated in last weekend’s Bike MS: Historic New Bern Ride. Cyclists left from Union Point Park in New Bern for the successful 21st annual Bike MS September 12-13. Over $1.34 million has been counted to date, and officials project that they are on target to meet their $1.7 million goal.

Also converging on the historic town were plein air artists from Eastern North Carolina participating in the International Plein Air Painter's (IPAP) 7th annual Worldwide Paint Out (WWPO). The paint out is designed to bring recognition to the tradition of painting "en plein air"... the French term for "in the open air". The event brings plein air artists from all over the world who agree to paint outdoors on the same date by organizing events in their local area. Plein air painters from Onslow, Craven, Beaufort, Carteret, Wayne, Pamlico, and Pender counties were present for the special 2 day event.

The following artists participated in the 7th WWPO:
Susan Cheatham (organizer)
