The tidewaters of coastal North Carolina weave their way through the marshlands creating beauty unsurpassed. The texture of the grass against the smooth water create artistic patterns that are only enhanced by the time of day they are viewed. Here is one such scene viewed at 2:00 PM. Check out the "Tidewaters and Marsh... 8:00PM" for a contrasting view.

Let's Go Kayaking

"Let's Go Kayaking"... 6x8" Oil on Panel, alla prima, 7-2007.
SOLD... Thanks Jean!

My family and I have spent countless hours kayaking the beautiful stretch of the south fork of the New River from Todd to Fleetwood, NC. This slow meandering part of the river is chucked full of natural beauty and a "Must Do Trip" if you get the chance. This store, The Riverside General Store, is on the banks of the stretch of river mentioned. They rent kayaks, canoes, bikes, and water tubes for anyone interested in having an awesome time. While driving by it I had to stop the car to snap a photo of what I knew to be a great future painting... the way the colors of the kayaks POPPED against the muted tones of the scene screamed "Paint Me!"

Here I am having a great time... "let's go kayaking"...

Cold and Choppy

.."Cold and Choppy"... 6x8" Oil on Panel, alla prima, 7-2007.
SOLD... Thanks Kim!

I spent many days of my youth and early adulthood striving to catch the perfect wave. It was a ritual spent with close friends... We'd cruise to Emerald Isle or Topsail Island with hopes of at least 3 to 4 feet and glassy... most times to find shore break or choppy. I would even don the wet-suit and venture out on those cold February days like portrayed in this painting titled "Cold and Choppy". The lingo in this short text may sound odd but anyone who has ever surfed knows what I'm talking about.

The Manor is now the home of the Parkway Craft Center, one of five shops of the Southern Highland Craft Guild which features handmade crafts by hundreds of regional artists. The beautiful park boasts 25 miles of carriage trails that wind through the fields and forests of the 3,500-acre estate. A must see if you are ever traveling along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

I came across this shaded lane while out photographing the original Mast General Store in Valle Crucis, NC. I was drawn to the inviting scene by the way the dappled light stuck this old dirt road. The patterns of light and shadow called to the artist within... I'm glad I listened!

The Country Store

"The Country Store"... 6x8", Oil on Panel, alla prima, 7-2007.
SOLD... Thanks again Al!

Country stores like this dotted our landscapes in mass a few decades ago... now there only seem to be a few left. This general store is located in the small community of Valle Crucis, North Carolina, in the Blue Ridge mountains. It is the annex store to the original Mast General store just down the road a piece which was built in the late 1800's. My kids love this annex store because they have every kind of nostalgic candy you can think of displayed in barrels... you pay by the pound! Does anyone remember "BB Bats"?... how about those wax harmonicas?... yep... they have 'em!

SOLD... Thanks again Al!

Located in our nation's capital... the Jefferson National Memorial is not only a commemoration to our third president, the father of the Declaration of Independence but the core values for which this great nation was founded upon. Inscribed on the panel of the interior northeast wall are these words... "God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God?"

Located in the West Potomac park in Washington, DC... the memorial is seen here from across the Potomac River. The Jefferson Memorial was officially dedicated on April 13, 1943... the 200th anniversary of Jefferson's birthday.

Living on the coast... water and boats are among my favorite subjects to paint. This painting titled, "Heading Out", captures a boat heading out of port from Morehead City, NC, on a "Half Day" charter of deep sea fishing. If you ever get the the chance to take one of these fishing charters... do so! If you have been on one before... you already know the excitement a great day of deep sea fishing brings!

"Church of the Frescoes... St. Mary's"... 6x8", Oil on Panel
SOLD... Thanks Jim!

St Mary's is one of two quaint churches located in Ashe County, North Carolina. It shares a unique bond with Holy Trinity of Glendale Springs that goes beyond their Episcopal affiliation with the Church of Christ... they both house artwork by renowned artist, Ben Long. Ben Long and his students spent months painting religious scenes in the classic style of fresco in both churches. St Mary's was built in 1905 in the small community of West Jefferson and houses several frescoes among the most popular, "The Mystery of Faith". The church still serves the community and is visited by thousands every year since 1975 when "The Mystery of Faith" was painted.

The actual fresco painting by Ben Long, "The Mystery of Faith".
