I painted these three pumpkins from life. Three of my artist fiends gather one every other week to paint a still life from life. We take turns bringing the still life arrangement... cool thing is... you never know what these guys will bring!

The Four Brush-ka-teers minus Two strike again last night!

Dean and Mitchell couldn't make our bi-monthly paint out this week... Stephen and I were forced to carry the banner (or I should say "brush") in their stead. Stephen was in charge of the still life this week which proved to be a great exercise in painting brass.

Here's my painting from the session... 10x12" oil on linen by Bernie Rosage Jr.

Here is Stephen's painting... 14x11" acrylic on canvas by Stephen Greer Sr.

"My Oath" by Bernie Rosage Jr.

"My Oath"... 10x8" acrylic on canvas. Alla prima from life by Bernie Rosage Jr., 2010.

I painted this painting from life during one of our "Brush-ka-teer" sittings recently. It is a rewarding experience to paint with three other artists who are my prayer partners. I have special plans for this painting as a gift to someone I am thankful for. When Dean set up this still life I immediately thought of Psalms 119:105. Verses 105 and 106 were key verses in Pastor Jason's sermon last week at FBC and thus the title.

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws.

Psalms 119: 105,106

Blowin' the Blues!

I am passionate about: God's Love, my family, my wife, my children, my grandchildren, art, history, and the BLUES!

My tribute to Sonny Boy Williamson...

"Blowin' the Blues!" - 8x8 - acrylic on canvas panel - Bernie Rosage Jr. - 2010 - painted alla prima from life

Mump, Mumps!

"Mump, Mumps!"... 8x10" acrylic on canvasboard, alla prima from life, Bernie Rosage Jr., 10-18-2010.

My oldest daughter, Lyndsey (now 26), used to always call pumpkins... "Mump, Mumps". To this day... the Rosages' refer to pumpkins as "Mump, Mumps". I did this painting last night alla prima from life with my pards... the Brush-ka-teers!

Painting from life...

This 8x10" acrylic on canvas is from our latest "Brush-ka-teers" session. We always paint from life and take turns bringing the still life. This week Stephen brought crystal glasses... very challenging! Enjoy... plan to launch this one on Etsy soon.

About this painting:
I painted this still life titled "Confederate Canteen" for Confederate Memorial Day which is recognized on May 10th in North Carolina and several other southern states. North Carolina recognizes May 10th as the date because that is the day Stonewall Jackson died... almost all NC troops in Lee's Army of Northern Virginia fought in Stonewall's Corps. This replica Confederate drum style canteen was set up in my studio and painted from life. My special tribute to the southern soldier...

Growing up in the coastal plains region of North Carolina snow is something I see once a year if I'm lucky. Cotton fields with their white expanse are as close as I get. I set up this small branch of cotton in a "Ball" jar with an old iron in the studio and painted it from life. Why cotton?... It's conflicting textures of roughness and smoothness and the mere fact that most people don't know what cotton looks or grows like were the motivating factors behind this one. I hope you enjoy it... cotton still makes me think of snow.

Pears are my favorite fruit to paint… just type in the word “pears” in the search box above if you don’t believe me. Two of my artist friends joined me in my studio to paint this small still life… a study in complementary colors. It was really cool to see each artists’ rendition of this lonely pear. All three renditions are pictured below...

This pair of ballet point shoes was painted from life in my studio. I loved the challenge presented by the lights and darks, form, and shadows. There is something classical and peaceful about an old pair of ballet shoes... "Waiting for the Recital" seems to be a perfect title for this painting.

Everyday objects painted from life is the essence of the "Painting a Day" art movement that is gaining momentum in the art collecting market.
