I love working from life... it hons the skills of observation for an artist. After I set up this small still life it occurred to me that this pear was nude. In fact... Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres' "The Bather of Valpinçon" came to mind. Click on the link and let me know what you think. For me... pears are as beautiful as the human form.

This small still life titled "Cadmium Lemon" was painted from life as part of my "a painting a day" series. The play on subject matter ties my love of painting everyday objects like this lemon and my love of art represented by the tube of cadmium lemon paint.

Downtown Wilmington, North Carolina is steeped in history and southern charm. I could spend countless hours painting her old buildings with their varied shapes, colors and designs. This building on Front Street is across the street from the famed "Cotton Exchange". Upstairs is a studio apartment owned by one of my friends... it's as if he owns a piece of history.

Another willing subject posed in my studio for a small still life from life. This apple was a study in shadows and dramatic lighting. I back-lit the apple and allowed the shadow to help emphasize the composition. I like this square format and plan to do many more like this one.

Another barn... I never tire of painting them. They are such willing subjects... their character lines are as impressive as any "Old Salt" or "Mountaineer". Old tobacco barns like this one are rapidly becoming a thing of the past. Their replacements... the bulk barn... just doesn't have the personality these old giants have. I spent many summers as a youth working around barns just like this one.

I have been on a barn kick lately... I never tire of painting them. This old barn is like family. It is located on the road I grew up on... I have passed it thousands of times but finally got that "Round TUIT" and picked up the brush to capture it before it is gone forever. I painted this from a photo as a demo for the "Career Day" at my daughter's school. We talked about being an artist as a career and the importance of supporting the arts.

Daily News article about the event... Butcher? Baker? Candlestick maker?

SOLD... Thanks Jo!

I set up this small still life and painted it as an art lesson for a friend who has recently taken up oil painting. We talked about the importance of painting from life... how it hons the skills of an artist by teaching him how to "see". The "art of seeing" as my art teacher called it. We could all benefit from the "art of seeing"... a method where we learn to see the things around us by taking them in, savoring them, and thinking about what we see... sure beats the alternative... "just looking".

Everyday objects painted from life is the essence of the "Painting a Day" art movement that is gaining momentum in the art collecting market.

In Memory of the Irish Volunteer

"In Memory of the Irish Volunteer... Wearing of the Green"... 8x10" Oil on Panel, alla prima from life, 1-2008.
SOLD... Thanks Robert G.!

Close up...

This painting is dedicated to the members of the famed Irish Brigade who fought so gallantly for the Union during the American Civil War. In December 1862, after many hard months of hard fighting the regiments of the Irish Brigade turned in their ragged regimental flags... they were to be replaced at a ceremony set for December 13, 1862 but the brigade was called into action for the Battle of Fredericksburg and the tragic assault on Marye's Heights that day. The New York regiments went into battle that day without their green flags. In their stead, General Meagher and his staff gave a sprig of boxwood to every man to wear in his hat to identify them as members of the Irish Brigade. The 28th Massachusetts, the only regiment carrying a green flag that day, was placed in the center of the brigade as it made the assault. The results of the attack were devastating; the Irish Brigade that had gone into battle 1200 men strong, came out with only 263 standing between its five regiments. Sprigs of boxwood (the wearing of the green) were a common adornment on their hats from that time on.

I set up this still life in my studio paying special attention to the historical accuracy of the subject. The federal kepi is adorned with a sprig of boxwood and red trefoil corp badge which was distributed to the Union army just before the battle of Chancellorsville in May 1863. The Red Trefoil or Club denoted the Second Division, Second Army Corps which the Irish Brigade was assigned to for most of its service to the preservation of this country.

This painting, "Ocracoke Lighthouse... Up Close and Personal", gives a different vantage point of how this famous lighthouse is usually painted or photographed. The Outer Banks of North Carolina are beautiful... the crowning jewel in my humble opinion is Ocracoke Island... I always enjoy my visits there. Some legends say that Blackbeard's treasure is buried under the Ocracoke Lighthouse... very doubtful since the notorious pirate was killed in 1718... over a century before the lighthouse was completed in 1823. Ocracoke Lighthouse is currently the oldest continuously operating lighthouse in North Carolina.

I painted this lone pear as a demo for Mrs Nickel's 7th and 8th grade art classes at New Bridge Middle School. I like to give demo's to school groups like this to help generate a desire for the arts in young people. I am a dedicated art advocate as well as artist. The art students were very receptive and inspiring.
