Freedom Fountain Exhibit

Bernie and several of his art students will have paintings on exhibit at the Council for the Arts "Freedom Fountain" Exhibit from May 5 - 25, 2013. Opening Reception, Sunday, May 5th from 2:30-4:00pm. Drop by the Council and see this special show. Several students' work is shown in this video produced by G10 for the city of Jacksonville.

Onslow County... All County Arts

Artists... Bernie Rosage Jr., Stephen Greer, Mitchell Morton and Janet Nickle had the honor of working with over 40 of the best high school artists in Onslow County. We gave a "painting from life" workshop in four different 1 hour 45 minute "break out" sessions. The event is called "All County Arts" and brings together the best artists from each high school in the county for a weekend of collaboration and workshops to celebrate these young artists and promote the arts in our community. The event is headed up by Janae Copeland, Education Coordinator for Arts in the Onslow County Schools, and all the Onslow County high school art teachers. They did a GREAT job in organizing this event which is in its fourth year.

Here's my painting from yesterday's OOPS (Onslow Outdoor Painters Society) plein air paint out at the MCAS Marina. It was great painting with Dad and so many of my artist friends.

WHAT: OOPS! August 2011 Paint Out

WHEN: Sunday, August 28, 2011 from 1pm (or earlier) until...

WHERE: Trent River Boat Access, Pollocksville, NC (on Highway 17N just before the Trent River Bridge turn right into public access area on the river.... shelter and restrooms available.)

NOTE FROM PATSY (Paint Out Organizer):

Let’s plan for August 28th. Maybe ask everyone if they’d like to have a little picnic afterwards, since there really is nowhere there to eat. There is only one restaurant there and it is closed on Sundays to the best of my knowledge. We could each bring a little something to share or bring our own individual brown-bag meals. Just need to let me know the count, and I’ll try to have water like Dean did last time since the weather is so hot. I haven’t been to Pollocksville yet, but will do so this week most likely Tuesday. The wildlife area is a right turn just before the bridge there in Pollocksville. I believe there is plenty of parking, and there is a covered picnic area with 2-4 tables. Not far from it is T-shaped pier and there are a few large shade trees in the parking lot. It’s not a large area, but I believe large enough to accommodate us.

Plein air painting at the Beirut Memorial...

Had a great time in life class today...

I joined my pards from OOPS (Onslow Outdoor Painters Society) for our annual (inside where it's warm) life class. John Currie was our model and did an outstanding job! The real treat was listening to him play "Old Time" music on his banjo for three hours while we painted.

Had some PLEIN air FUN this weekend!

Enjoyed the beautiful weather this weekend plein air painting and cooking out! Saturday after work I met Tami and Olivia at Richard Ray Park... Tami was planning her daily run around Jacksonville Commons while Olivia led the way on her bike. This gave me about 45 minutes to turn out this small 6x8" painting. BTW... LOVE my new pochade box!

Sunday was gorgeous and I spent the afternoon painting with my friends from OOPS... (Onslow Outdoor Painters Society). We painted at the Octagon House (1850) in Cedar Point.

Had a GREAT time at the 3rd Annual Kinston Plein Air Paint Out

Mitchell, Karen, Bernie (me), and Susan... members of the plein air group OOPS (Onslow Outdoor Painters Society) recently participated in the 3rd Annual Kinston Plein Air Paint Out.


I set up my easel on Queen Street and painted Christopher's Cafe across the street. I was drawn to the light hitting the various newspaper boxes on the corner.

Here I am set up on the corner of Queen and Gordon streets... I was drawn to the clock on the busy corner. I jammed to Paul Rogers on the IPOD as I painted this one allowing me to concentrate on the painting vs talking to everyone (I'm a social-lite) plus the music occupied my left brain allowing the creative right side to take over more... :) This painting won 2nd place in the competition and sold that day.

I painted two of the three days allotted for the event. Here I am set up behind the Kinston Arts Council Building looking toward Queen's Street Methodist Church. The ornate towers spoke to me but I wanted to capture a feeling of light vs painting all that detail. Still jamming to Paul Rogers during this one! This one sold right away too. :)

Here I set up to paint the exact replica of the Confederate Ram CSS Ram Neuse.

While painting the various scenes in Kinston I think the COOLEST building in town was the new Mother Earth Brewing building. The new brewery has a tap room and is building a GREAT reputation in Kinston and Eastern NC. Here's one I did of their cool logo on the side of the brewery... BTW.. their motto is "Love, Peace, and Beer" how cool is that! I painted the old timer in as an after thought to help the composition. This painting sold that first day too.

Here I am pictured with the award winner and sold paintings.... Had a blast at this event and will return next year!

Bernie attends Mike Rooney plein air workshop...

Several OOPS members (myself included) recently enjoyed a one day workshop given by artist and friend, Mike Rooney. Mike taught us the Cape Cod style of painting which is colorful and FULL of light. We went through various exercises, watched him do a plein air demo, and then painted ourselves. The style was very challenging for many of us but it was a breath of fresh air to be taken out of our comfort zones and learn something new. A special thanks to the Council for the Arts for subsidising and organizing this awesome workshop!

"Arts by the Sea" plein air in Swansboro, NC

"Arts by the Sea" Festival... Swansboro, NC... 8x10" Acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas, en plein aire, 6-12-2010, Bernie Rosage Jr.

The small North Carolina coastal town of Swansboro is dubbed "the friendly city by the sea"... and aptly so. It's quaint shops and great eating places make for a must trip if you are ever in eastern North Carolina. One of my favorite structures in the old town is the Olde Brick Store circa 1839. The former warehouse scarred by Civil War mortar shells once held naval stores, thousands of barrels of turpentine and sometimes prisoners.

When it I painted this plein air piece it was the centerpiece of festivities during the annual "Arts by the Sea" festival in Swansboro. The festival is also an annual event for the OOPS (Onslow Outdoor Painters Society) group for our June Paint Out.

It is a come and go as you please paint out... this year I painted in the afternoon with my painting bud... Mitchell Morton. We met several artists and art lovers. My apologies to anyone who spoke to me and I didn't answer... I wasn't ignoring you... I was jamming to Bad Company on my IPOD. :)

This painting will be on display and available for purchase in October 2010 at the Baysden Gallery for the OOPS group show... celebrating our third year anniversary.
