Happy St. Patrick's Day!
Happy St. Patrick's Day!
An Irish Toast...
May the good Lord take a liking to you...
But not too soon!
But not too soon!
Legend of Saint Patrick...
Good St. Patrick travelled far, to teach God's Holy Word
And when he came to Erin's sod, a wondrous thing occurred
He plucked a shamrock from the earth and held it in His hand
To symbolise the Trinity that all might understand
The first leaf for the Father
And the second for the Son
The third leaf for the Holy Spirit
All three of them in one.

About this painting:
Tami and I had our first Pub Grub and pint in Ireland's oldest pub...The Brazen Head... in Dublin. In my American mindset I think of anything over 100 years to be old... well that bubble was burst as we enjoyed ourselves in the Brazen Head which has been a pub since 1198AD. WOW... now that's OLD!
The Brazen Head has managed to retain the charm and characteristics of it's past and in particular it's patrons, who have included such literaries as James Joyce, Brendan Behan and Jonathan Swift as well as such revolutionaries as Robert Emmet, Wolfe Tone, Daniel O'Connell and Michael Collins.
Today the patrons still include some famous faces, including some very famous musicians like Van Morrison, Hothouse Flowers, Mary Black and Garth Brooks... not to mention... two jovial Americans... US... Sláinte!

About this painting:
Countdown to St Paddy's Day...
Thought for the Day... An Irish Prayer
May God give you...
For every storm, a rainbow,
For every tear, a smile,
For every care, a promise,
And a blessing in each trial.
For every problem life sends,
A faithful friend to share,
For every sigh, a sweet song,
And an answer for each prayer.

While in Ireland, my wife and I visited Bunratty Folk Park in County Clare. The Irish village was set up recreating the general feel of the 19th century with a period style village main street, mill, church, and thatch-roofed cottages. The Bunratty Mill stood out like a jewel in the quaint village. I have painted several paintings of the old mill... here is my latest.

What a NOVEL idea!
Last August I received this email from Paul Ferris, an author from the UK...
Dear Bernie,
I am in the process of having my first novel published. I came across your painting of Half'penny Bridge on the internet and would like to consider using the image as the front cover of the book. Please could you let me know if this is acceptable to you? The novel is entitled 'An Irish Heartbeat' and contains a lengthy passage between the two main characters (Cormac and Bernadette) which takes place on the bridge. Thank you for your consideration of this request and good luck with your excellent work.
Kind Regards,
Paul Ferris
Today I was pleasantly surprised by a package that arrived for me... when I opened it I found a signed copy of Paul Ferris' new novel An Irish Heartbeat... with my painting as the cover! I can't wait to read it!
From gallery walls, to wine bottles, to book covers... I'm thankful and humbled.
Thanks Paul for the gift and pleasant surprise!

About this painting:
When we think of Ireland, we think of the Emerald Isle, the shamrock, the "Wearing of the Green" and the 37 other almost proverbial shades of green. The landscape of Ireland is unsurpassed in beauty. The Emerald Isle boasts the fact that one can see “40 shades of green” an expression made famous by our own Johnny Cash. After a trip to Ireland it seems “The man in black” was also enchanted… so much that he recorded an album in 1961. The most enduring of Cash's Irish songs is "Forty Shades of Green", including the confession that "most of all I miss a girl in Tipperary town, and most of all I miss her lips as soft as eiderdown".
About the "Enchanting Ireland" collection:
Take an artistic journey to the Emerald Isle as seen through the eyes and palette of American Artist, Bernie Rosage Jr. The entire "Enchanting Ireland" collection (39 oil paintings) has been on exhibit in several galleries including The Baysden Gallery and New Bern Artworks Gallery and is now available online. This collection was inspired by a trip Bernie and his wife, Tami, took to Ireland in celebration of their 20th wedding anniversary and their family heritage. The collection is the culmination of 11 months of arduous work… “I thoroughly enjoyed painting this series… with each stroke it felt as if I was still in that special place” states Rosage. He goes on to say, “It is my wish that you (the viewer) get a sense of the beauty and magical quality of the Irish landscape, culture, and her people as you view these works… in short… I hope you too are Enchanted.”
All paintings are signed originals using artist grade oils on archival surfaces. "Certificate of Authenticity" included.

What the heck....?
Can you guess what the four white spots below are?
.jpg)
This extreme close up shows exactly how our minds can fill in the blanks and finish a painting for us. Impressionism is based on this theory... as our our minds eye mixes the colors and brings form to random shapes we can identify complex subjects with little input. Pretty cool huh?
Scroll down to see what these shapes represent and you can see the subject come to life.

Thatched roofed cottages are a common site in Ireland... a beautiful site I must add. We visited Bunratty Folk Park where we got to see and go in several. The village was set up recreating the general feel of the 19th century with a period style village main street. The cottages came alive as we stepped back in time... we even got to enjoy the smell of peat fires burning in the cottage fireplaces.

"Enchanting Ireland" blog just started by Bernie...
Like wild geese we all have flown, to Columbia's rich shores of Ameriquay... Those Emerald hues, they haunt us home, with a vow in our heart to return one day..."
... and we did... as a celebration of our 20th wedding anniversary and our family heritage. We hope you enjoy our experiences from our trip to Ireland, the land of "40 shades of green".
We recently started a new blog titled "Enchanting Ireland" as a way to organize and share our experiences and Bernie's paintings from our recent trip. Paintings for sale will still be listed here but the WIP paintings for the upcoming exhibit will be posted on the new blog.

"Galway Bay #1", Ireland
"Galway Bay #1, Ireland"... 6x8" Oil on panel, alla prima, 7-2008. Small study for my "Enchanting Ireland" series that will exhibit August 2009. PRIVATE COLLECTION, Ohio
Click on image to see a larger view...

This small painting is a study for larger works that will make up a solo show titled "Enchanting Ireland" that will exhibit in August 2009 at the Baysden Gallery. These small works allow me to experiment with composition, color harmony, etc before committing the work to a large canvas. They serve as thumbnail views and studies to get the most out of a larger work.
Galway Bay was a very special place on our recent trip to Ireland. This scene of the bay is viewed from the small village of Claddagh... a small fishing village known worldwide for the Claddagh ring. This spot was special for my wife and I because we exchanged Claddagh rings and renewed our wedding vows here in celebration of our 20th wedding anniversary... the reason for our special trip to Ireland.

Enchanting Ireland series officially begins NOW!
I have spent the last couple evenings working on my first painting for my "Enchanting Ireland" series. I plan to show the paintings in various stages as WIPs... Works in Progress. This will be a bit different for my loyal patrons who frequent this site because you are used to seeing finished works done "alla prima"... "all at once". I also plan to share my thoughts and inspiration behind these paintings... possibly an Irish history lesson or two along the way.

Great News! My first solo art show set for August 2009
.jpg)
I just received some great news... my recent trip to Ireland will be the inspiration behind my first solo art exhibit set for the Baysden Gallery in August 2009. The exhibit is titled "Enchanting Ireland" and I have exactly one year to paint approx. 24 paintings for the show. I look forward to sharing this journey with you and could use your encouragement every step of the way. I have been sorting through the 1900+ reference images I took trying to chronicle a story about this special trip. I hope to capture the beauty of the country and her people in this special series. I plan on painting several small studies as inspiration for the larger works and will offer them for sale here and on eBay.
Stay tuned...

Back from our trip to Ireland...

Tami and I just returned from Ireland... here we are pictured at the National Art Gallery of Ireland in Dublin. I have a ton reference photos to work from... over 1900 to be exact! I am planning a large painting series titled "Enchanted Ireland". There will be an abundance of small oil studies for this series so I'll have plenty to offer on ebay in a few weeks.
Thanks for your patience.
