The Four Brush-ka-teers minus Two strike again last night!

Dean and Mitchell couldn't make our bi-monthly paint out this week... Stephen and I were forced to carry the banner (or I should say "brush") in their stead. Stephen was in charge of the still life this week which proved to be a great exercise in painting brass.

Here's my painting from the session... 10x12" oil on linen by Bernie Rosage Jr.

Here is Stephen's painting... 14x11" acrylic on canvas by Stephen Greer Sr.

Something worth WINEing about!

North Carolina is rapidly becoming known as "Wine Country". Vineyards are replacing what were once tobacco fields all across the Old North State. North Carolina is home to more than 90 wineries. The number of wineries has more than quadrupled since 2001. Check out the details of NC Wineries HERE.

Among the 90 plus wineries is the New River Winery located in Lansing, Ashe County. The small winery turns out some of the best in the state and is rapidly building a reputation of superb wines.

Here's a bottle of one of their newest wines... "Winter Blush"... SUPERB indeed!

Not only to they make great wine... they promote local artists. Here's some info from their web page...

Label Art

At New River Winery we also are all about promoting the marvels of Ashe County. A large part of what is wonderful about the area is the creative people who live and work here. We are proud to share the work of some of our local artists on our wine labels.

Bernie Rosage’s “Snowy Blue Ridge” elegantly captures the serenity of a snowy winter afternoon. We found this painting on the internet and were delighted to learn that it had been painted near a family home in Fleetwood. Bernie was so gracious to allow us to use a rendition of this work on our Winter Blush label.

I am honored to have my painting, "Snowy Evening in the Blue Ridge", grace the label of Winter Blush from the New River Winery.

About this painting:
When we think of Ireland, we think of the Emerald Isle, the shamrock, the "Wearing of the Green" and the 37 other almost proverbial shades of green. The landscape of Ireland is unsurpassed in beauty. The Emerald Isle boasts the fact that one can see “40 shades of green” an expression made famous by our own Johnny Cash. After a trip to Ireland it seems “The man in black” was also enchanted… so much that he recorded an album in 1961. The most enduring of Cash's Irish songs is "Forty Shades of Green", including the confession that "most of all I miss a girl in Tipperary town, and most of all I miss her lips as soft as eiderdown".

About the "Enchanting Ireland" collection:
Take an artistic journey to the Emerald Isle as seen through the eyes and palette of American Artist, Bernie Rosage Jr. The entire "Enchanting Ireland" collection (39 oil paintings) has been on exhibit in several galleries including The Baysden Gallery and New Bern Artworks Gallery and is now available online. This collection was inspired by a trip Bernie and his wife, Tami, took to Ireland in celebration of their 20th wedding anniversary and their family heritage. The collection is the culmination of 11 months of arduous work… “I thoroughly enjoyed painting this series… with each stroke it felt as if I was still in that special place” states Rosage. He goes on to say, “It is my wish that you (the viewer) get a sense of the beauty and magical quality of the Irish landscape, culture, and her people as you view these works… in short… I hope you too are Enchanted.”

About this painting:
I painted this still life titled "Confederate Canteen" for Confederate Memorial Day which is recognized on May 10th in North Carolina and several other southern states. North Carolina recognizes May 10th as the date because that is the day Stonewall Jackson died... almost all NC troops in Lee's Army of Northern Virginia fought in Stonewall's Corps. This replica Confederate drum style canteen was set up in my studio and painted from life. My special tribute to the southern soldier...

About this painting:
Pilot Mountain is so unique it is often considered North Carolina's natural wonder. Almost every Tarheel can identify it by sight and many have traveled to see it in person. A remnant of the ancient Sauratown Mountains, Pilot Mountain is a quartzite monadnock. To the native Saura Indians, the earliest known inhabitants of the region, Pilot Mountain was known as Jomeokee, the “Great Guide” or “Pilot.” It guided both Native Americans and early European hunters along a north-south path through the area. This small painting is a signed original used as a study for a larger work.

Went back for seconds...

A little over a week ago I painted with my pards in OOPS (Onslow Outdoor Painters Society). We painted in the Kellum Community where I grew up. Check out this video from the event. We enjoyed the location so much that me and Mitchell Morton went back for seconds! Below is my painting from the first outing...

9x14.5" oil on Linen Panel, painted en plein air May 2010 by Bernie Rosage Jr.

Our position looking at the old tobacco barn and gardens.... below is my painting from our plein air outing yesterday. After teaching the plein air workshop to the All County Art Students earlier in the month I heave been experimenting with acrylics. Loving that FAST drying time and the ability to layer color on color in a matter of moments. These paintings will be on display in October 2010 at the Baysden Gallery for the OOPS group show to celebrate our third year anniversary.

8x10" Acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas painted en plein air, May 2010 by Bernie Rosage Jr.

Mitchell singing in the rain! It drizzled off and on throughout the day cutting our painting time a bit short again... had to call it a day around 5pm. Another great day plein air painting!

Have a GREAT Memorial Day weekend...
Bernie

OOPS! May Paint Out was AWESOME!

YouTube video link... OOPS! May 2010 Paint Out in the Kellum Community

15 OOPS (Onslow Outdoor Painters Society) artists converged on the small community of Kellum to paint in the gardens of John and Carolyn Meadows and Bernie and Maggie Rosage Sr. Bernie Jr., Dean, Mitchell, Penny, Ann, John, Bonnie, Gordon, Pat, Stephen, Karen, Sherry, and Patsy were among the artists present. Bernie's parents were gracious hosts and provided us with some great refreshments. An approaching thunder storm cut our painting time a bit short but we have a great time of fellowship and critique on the covered deck at Bernie and Maggie's house.
