Boudin's Original
About this painting:
I love to study and work from the old masters. This small painting is a cover of a portion of a larger work by Eugene Boudin titled, “Jetty at High Tide, Trouville.” I have been an admirer and student of Boudin’s work for some time but had the privilege of seeing his work in person for the first time at the Landscapes from the Age of Impressionism Exhibit (October 21, 2007–January 20, 2008) at the North Carolina Museum of Art.

Eugène Boudin (12 July 1824 – 8 August 1898) was one of the first French landscape painters to paint outdoors. Boudin was a marine painter, and expert in the rendering of all that goes upon the sea and along its shores.

About this painting:
Today's daily painting includes a history lesson... hope you enjoy...
The mounds of the Civil War fort, Fort Fisher, are a perfect place to take a peaceful and scenic stroll today. The scrub oaks, mounds, visitor's center, and views of the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Fear River make the spot a favorite North Carolina tourist destination. Until its capture by the Union army in 1865, Fort Fisher was the largest earthwork fortification in the world. The “Gibraltar of the South” protected the port of Wilmington and ensured that the Confederacy had at least one “lifeline” until the last few months of the Civil War. Confederate fortune ran out in January 1865. On January 12, Union ships bombarded the fort. Some have estimated the Union firepower to be approximately 100 shells per minute. The incessant Union fire continued until mid-day on January 15, when Union troops stormed the fort from all sides. Hand-to-hand combat ensued. A few hours later, Union troops captured the fort. With the fort’s capture, the Confederacy lost only remaining supply line to its infantry protecting the Confederate capital, Richmond, Virginia. The Battle of Fort Fisher was the largest amphibious assault in history until surpassed by D'Day during World War II.

About this painting:
I'm gaining an appreciation for Jazz music... it is one of the few things that is truly American! There is one name that is synonymous with Jazz... "Satchmo!"

"I think that anybody from the 20th century, up to now, has to be aware that if it wasn't for Louis Armstrong, we'd all be wearing powdered wigs. I think that Louis Armstrong loosened the world, helped people to be able to say "Yeah," and to walk with a little dip in their hip. Before Louis Armstrong, the world was definitely square, just like Christopher Columbus thought." -- South African trumpet legend Hugh Masekela

I try to evoke feelings of peace and serenity in many of my paintings... the world is often to hectic for me as I suspect it is for you at times too. It is my hope that this painting helps you escape the turmoil of life and relax. I based this painting on a quote by Washington Irving... "There is a serene and settled majesty to woodland scenery that enters into the soul and delights and elevates it, and fills it with noble inclinations.".

About this painting:
I never tire painting the North Carolina landscape... I live on the Carolina Coast but spend as much time in the Blue Ridge mountains as possible, all the while, painting as I journey through life.
The Eastern North Carolina landscape is dotted with tobacco barn scenes like this. Unfortunately, mother nature is claiming most of them. Today they serve as a constant reminder that things change and people adapt.

For nearly 200 years, North Carolina’s oldest standing lighthouse, Old Baldy, has marked the mouth of the historic Cape Fear River. This small painting, decorative display easel included, is a must for those lighthouse collectors out there!

Growing up in Eastern North Carolina, this was a common scene during my childhood and early adult years. The old tobacco barns have been replaced by the modern bulk barn and tobacco is no longer the main crop here... it has been replaced with cotton and sod. BTW... the bulk barn doesn't hold a candle when it comes to character that these old tobacco barns have!

I chanced upon this scene while driving on HWY 58 between Kinston and Trenton, NC. The green grass complimented by the red barn struck my fancy and inspired this painting.

This painting is the culmination of my love of painting and Robert Frost... "I shall be telling this with a sigh... Somewhere ages and ages hence:... Two roads diverged in a wood, and I... I took the one less traveled by... And that has made all the difference."
