Haybales II

"Haybales II"... 6x8" Oil on Canvas Board, alla Prima, 8-2007.
SOLD... Thanks Mary B.!

Another summer scene of haybales in the Blue Ridge. This one set in the early morning light. When I'm not painting them "en plein aire" I'm photographing them for my studio work. I never tire of their simplistic beauty and color harmonies.

Misty Mountain Hop

"Misty Mountain Hop"... 5x7" Oil on Panel, alla prima, 8-2007.
Private Collection

I was driving down Railroad Grade Road on my way to Todd, North Carolina, one foggy morning when scene after scene like this soon became the inspiration for this painting, "Misty Mountain Hop" (OK... I'm a Zeppelin fan too). The muted colors, dense fog, and shallow depth perception gave a feeling of being in tune with the surroundings. It was as if the world was telling me to slow down and take notice of the things right in front of me... I guess we all should do that more often. I hope this painting brings you the peace that that misty morning did for me.

The Highland Road

"The Highland Road"... 6x8" Oil on Panel, alla prima, 8-2007.
SOLD... Thanks again Art!

The Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina are the home to many fine people of Scottish descent. Many families in the area date back to the mid 1700's when they were deported to the Carolinas from their homeland under English rule. The Battle of Culloden (1746) was the final blow and what happened after the battle horrified the nation - the cruel harrowing of the Glens, when Scotland was laid bare by 'Butcher Cumberland'. Arriving in the Carolina Colony they found their way to the Blue Ridge mountains which resembled their homeland. These mountains furnished a new home, a peaceful life, and a fresh start. The Clans still gather at the Highland Games each July at Grandfather Mountain to keep the Highland traditions alive.

Once again my love of kayaking and painting have merged... my second painting in the series has taken us from the Outer Banks to a mountain lake. This scene has a relaxing feel... almost as if the kayaker has gone ashore to rest in the warm light of the afternoon.

SOLD... Thanks Mike!

My love of kayaking and the waterway have once again merged into another painting titled... "Waterway Waiting". This scene depicts the calm of a beautiful day near the small coastal town of Ocracoke, located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. This lone kayak seems to be waiting for someone to take paddles in hand and set out on the water for a great time.

Pathway of Light

"Pathway of Light"... 7x5" Oil on panel, alla prima, 8-2007.
SOLD... Thanks Bob!

There is something about pathways that evoke a feeling of peace and life's journey for me. I can't seem to walk one (my family and I walk many) without snapping a photo with a future painting in mind. The specular light crossing this path which seemed to lead into a tunnel of bowing trees caught my eye and my desire to capture it on canvas. Every time I walk along one... In my mind I sing Michael Card's song, "Joy in the Journey"...

"There is a joy in the journey...
There's a light we can love on the way...
There is a wonder and wildness to life....
And freedom for those who obey"

Across the Water... Plein Air

"Across the Water... Plein Air"... 6x8" Oil on Panel, en plein aire, 7-2007.
SOLD... Thanks Art!

Recently I had the privilege of going plein air painting with my painting buddy, Olivia. We packed our gear and headed to one of our favorite spots... the coastal town of Swansboro, NC. It was a beautiful afternoon to paint and we met several friendly people. Be sure to check Olivia's painting out below... by the way, Olivia is not only my plein air painting buddy... she's my six year old daughter.

I was painting the view across the water while Livie was painting the boat... here's her finished painting. I think she used her six year old artistic license a bit when she added the fish underwater... :)

Peaceful scenes like this are commonplace in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. An artist could spend a lifetime painting the countless rustic barns that make their home there.

I love waterfalls... especially the smaller more intimate ones. They evoke feelings of peace for me... the movement and sounds are almost hypnotic in a relaxing kind of way. Located in Swallow Falls State Park in Maryland is Muddy Creek Falls... the tallest falls in the state. If you ever get the chance to visit Garrett County, MD., don't pass up the opportunity to visit this spectacular park. Take a picnic lunch and plan to stay awhile... oh yeah... don't forget your camera!

This painting, on a Oil Primed Canvas Board with painted sides, is easily framed or displayed with a decorative easel.

All my paintings are signed originals using artist grade oils and archival surfaces. "Certificate of Authenticity" included.
